Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Besides my AMs, my cuckoos are my best sellers. I just make certain that anyone buying them doesn't expect "chocolate" eggs. They are very reliable layers, the eggs are enormous, and they have the best dispositions of any of my 7 breeds

I plan on selling hatching eggs and chicks as well. There will be a good market since I will be the only breeder that I know of in my area. I look forward to my marans projects. I have a young trio of splash marans I plan on using to breed some blues as well. I am looking forward to it. Im like a kid on christmas when I get new chicks or hatching eggs. Lol

I've kept chickens for 7 years, but only last year started learning about SOP. I have 2 flocks of beautiful Paul Smith AMs that I am hatching from now, and just got a new batch of BCM from Julie Akers (Davis line). I may go for a feather legged cuckoo one day, but not until that rooster passes. He really is the best rooster I have ever owned. Great protector, very fertile eggs, the first to call out when danger is around, good to his girls, but also respects me. He's not SOP, but he's my buddy

Your rooster is quite handsome. I have a newfound love for cuckoos and just Marans in general. I am not getting into it as a profit but solely as a hobby. I will only sell eggs and chickens that I would buy or breed from myself. Im like you, honesty is the best policy. The one breeder in my area I encountered was selling what could have passed as RIR eggs and was asking $50 per dozen. I politely declined and fibbed, I just said that was out of my price range when truthfully I would have paid that for quality Marans eggs. I want to be honest and only breed and sell as best quality I can manage. I wont sell chickens with problems or defects. A lady recently was asking to buy a little blr wyandotte cockerel from me. He had a hard hatch and was born with a slight scissor beak. I almost culled him at birth but was fond of him. He was a sweetie. You could barely tell and then you would have to have been looking for it to even notice. I wouldnt sell him but she insisted on having him so I gave him to her. I treat people the way I would want to be treated as a customer.

Oh and a good rooster is worth his weight in gold. He sounds like he takes good care of his girls and is a gentleman. I would keep him also. Very beautiful flock you have there.

Ameraucana. You know how the marans guys get mad when you don't spell it with an S? Same thing with Ameraucanas. Americana with an I is a cheap way hatcheries sell Easter Eggers as Ameraucana. I also have Easter Eggers, and love them, but my AMs are the most well bred birds on the farm

Oh okay! Excuse my misspelling of it then. Lol Your birds are beautiful! I love the green and blue eggs but my husband would kill me where I stood if I brought more chickens home. I have a chicken buying compulsion and I am hard to live with at times I imagine. I have my eye on some Crested Cream Legbars but I have to wait until my husband builds more pens. He loves me! Bless his heart. We have over 200 head of chickens. Lol

My wife and I bought 4 buff orpingtons for Easter at a feed store 7 years ago. Now we are at about 130 and counting
