Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have Little Peddlers and love them. They are friendly, active birds that lay a great color egg and have great type and color to work with. I ordered a dozen hatching eggs and hatched 5, but it was due to my own ineptness with an incubator at the time.

Maybe someone can chime in on Heaven Sent Ranch birds.
I have Greenfire 2015 and LP. These babies are so sweet. They follow me everywhere. Jump in my lap when I sit outside. So far they look really good. Almost 10 weeks. I got the chicks from Feels Right Farm. Rarebreedauction.com has several BCM breeders including Feels Right Farm (also on BYC), Greenfire Farms and others.

Update - I'm the gal with the Birchen Marans / Black Copper Marans cross chick... I took new photos this morning. I know that a couple folks responded thinking that it my be a female, but I really don't know. Look at the comb development? And this chick is always standing so darn upright. Makes me wonder. I'd love you guys to weigh in with opinions.

First photo is the original one I posted, and the other three are from this morning. 8-days passed between the first photo and the others. :)

I still don't see any wattle development so I'm keeping my guess of a pullet. My girls have a larger comb than other breeds at that age

Do your girls usually stand so tall at such a young age, too? I've never had any other breed do that.

I can start to tell sometimes as early as two weeks. I have some chicks that hatched March 30th., and some are already looking pretty masculine. Certainly by a month of age you should be able to tell on some. Marans seem to be manly earlier than any other breeds I have. Easy to tell early on my Olive Eggers (Marans by Ameraucana) also. Kern
