Havi: This year in the PNW we had such a mild weather that the birds feathers should have molted months before they actually did... That caused some mighty tired looking feathers. The new feathers will come in much better I imagine.

All depends what it looks like. There is always a possibility that Wheaten,White or Golden Salmon recessives might inherit melanisers from their BC parents,( & if they do not have the required Inhibitor of Dermal Melanin) might have black,grey or even blue shank colour. These would be culls as these shank colours are a disqualification in all Marans varieties except Black,BC & Birchin.
They may however be perfectly good examples of these varieties.
Judge the individual bird.

He's from the Wade Jeane line, too. And he is big. He's 5 mo, but already bigger than ALL of my adult hens! He's now the boss roo of the free ranging flock.

What is a "tail mite"... never had anything like that.... never even heard of a "tail mite".. got any pix??
My birds get tired feathers at the end of the season... They can look pretty ratty by the time they molt if the season is exceptionally long like this year.

Just keep the spray out of the eyes. You can actually spray the tails wothout catching up the birds. The feather mite is very , very small.
