Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi

It's something that just happens. I have used them before and it not show in the chicks I bred, I was breeding for egg color at that time.

I did a lot of breeding for solid blue Marans and passed them on to someone to grow for me. It's just got back to me that we have bred a solid blue male and have asked for pictures. I have had terrible predator problems this year with wire being ripped off pens and have had to screw doors shut at night. Thankfully one solid blue male survived.

So sorry to hear that.

Now I don't feel as bad about my predator problem. Screw the doors shut? Sheesh, what is getting to your birds? A two dog pack ripped open 5 of my coops several months back. Killed them and left them to waste, it was awful.

Hi

I heard from an old time judge that he had terrible problems with the combs of his birds because they had too many points. He mated the roosters with hens with not enough and got the correct number.

Hi

I had a very smart racoon that would open doors, one night it got over 50 small chicks. A small skunk that ate the heads off the small started stock, I still can't find where it got in so have lined the pen with screening. A bobcat that would run at the fence which startled the chickens and they would fly over the top. After that, they were kitty meat.

Oh .... I am so sorry! How can we even begin to try and outsmart these animals. I guess just an iron coop. Sheesh a bobcat!
