I am still learning myself. But I like her. She could live in my pen any day. Does she have some mossy spots or is it just the picture?

Thanks for taking a look at her. No mossy spots on her...must've been my camera. I have a cheapo digital and it doesn't take the greatest pics.

Snowbird I am not sure I would classify that as "straw".... I would call it gold... I would like to hear from a genetic expert on this...I am thinking that different genes drive that... I will consult with them and get back to you all. Bev could probably answer this very quickly. Straw is to be rejected completely, as the picture of the one Ruth posted.. That in fact would be classified as "straw".... Does the two tone copper/gold count? That I am unsure... I do believe that it carries the wheaton gene. Would anyone out there care to comment?... If not give me a little while.. I will find the answer.

I believe the yellow/gold speaks of the original mixup with the wheatons early on and shows that the gene for wheaton is present so the rooster could throw wheaton chicks classified as "sports".

I'm glad I'm not the only one confused but I'm also learning a lot. I too thought the other color was just a combo of copper and its various shades like dark copper and light copper and gold.

The pick of the roo I just posted with obvious straw colored hackles is what I thought "straw" meant. So see, posting pics is definitely helpful and everyone has a different interpretation.

I think that language is in large part the problem of understanding... What is straw??? what is copper, what is mahogany??? Then you get into acceptable tolerance and the delicate balance of them. I think this is an excellent point, Ruth.

Bev, Can you shine some light on this for us?

Has anyone said anything yet? OK here goes my non-expert opinion:

#1 The color is very nice--I see both copper and Mahogany. The type seems good, he is young and should fill out even more. His comb needs work (don't they all) his feathering on his feet needs work and his tail seems too high set. Same ol' question about the ear coverts...I was told they need to have some red in (which is an indicator of their ability to pass along the dark egg gene (?)

#2 Same good qualities as #1 but everything is a little better and his tail looks great. Feet are more feathered. I can even see a lining of red on the ear covert.

#3 Great feathering on the feet, tail looks good, color is great. He would probably be my first pic and then #2

Very nice birds overall, I will be glad to come and take them off your hands!

Straw color when referring to Marans is the color of Oat Straw a golden yellow. I don't think it has anything to do with Wheaten blood being involved. It is normal for all three of the colors to be hatched from the same mating.

Two of my broodies just hatched some BCMs and Blue Marans chicks...I'd love to know what they are already.

Yes, tell us!
