Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Eveil, If you did not let the eggs rest before putting them in the incubator, I doubt you will get any chicks, On a distance these came should of let them rest for 24 hours.

Sorry for the double posts guys! I was going backwards on my browser and not paying attention.... So apparently it posted the pics twice!

Thanks so much for the tips on the camera! I will re-post when they're a bit older! (These were just crappy cell phone pics and the cockerel won't let me close!).

Anyway, thanks for the advice and critique! I love to hear what is right AND wrong so I can look for it in the future!!! You guys are great!

Sorry about your rough travels with those eggs. I so hope and pray they make it. Listed is one of our closed BCM auction which explains how we pack eggs. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=387012 I'm sharing this with you to suggest that when next you order, you might want to be specific about how you want them packed. I've received eggs in cartons with either shredded paper or wrapped in a towel and they just didn't make the journey very well...So when I order eggs now, I'm very careful to review the feedback for the person as well as how they describe that they will wrap the eggs. .At any rate, do you know my friend Tori in Alaska, if so, you might enjoy the story of her four miracle hatch babies listed in the attached web site. I'm certainly going to pray for a great hatch for you.

I would suggest that you let the seller know of the status of the eggs. Unless he or she did not pack as described though, it may be a mute point but she or he might be interested. Granted, a lot can happen in transit, but from my humble thoughts, at least the better the packing, the better the opportunity for safe travel.

Well, I've rambled on here and again wish you the best of all possible hatches! Nancy

Thank you pinkchick . I have some going in the bator I hope they end up pullets so I can see how dark thier eggs will be. The blue is in with my Wheaton roo. Do to ran out of coop building funds for this year. So I can't wait to see what color they will be.

Eveil good luck on your hatch!

Snowbird: I let them rest for 6 hours like the book I was reading told me to. 24 hours?? hum I have not seen that long of a rest time. I hope they hatch. I gess I will have to try that next time.

Maybe you will get lucky and they will gather theirself back, I always rest mine over night when I buy eggs. Six hours is not much for such a long trip. What temp. and humidity are you using ?

Eveil, I also let mine rest overnight and have the incubator all set and ready for the eggs the next morning to early afternoon. Many books and people will say 6-24 hours and some say longer.

I have never ordered eggs before, so excuse the ignorant question BUT . . .. .

If you are placing the eggs under a broody, do you have to let them rest too ? ? ?

I am using 99.5 temp the books i have read say that the temp should be at a little higher like 101 or 102 but all of them say to use what your incubator tells you to. and the manual in the incubator suggest 99.5 for chickens. as for the humidity I chose to not add any water right now because the humidity all ready in the air is 90% due to the fact that it has been raining for 29 days. everything here is so wet. I was thinking of adding water to it if the humidity lowers and once it gets to day 16 because the books suggest that ithat is a good time to add water so that the shell will soften and it will be better for hatching.

Yes, if the eggs have been shipped they should always be allowed to rest and settle the air cell first. It is about the jostled air cell that occurs during shipping.
