Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

If the air cells are not allow reattaching time (rest) then when you turn them on thier sides they will move with the liquid and will now allow the necessary pip space... In such cases that the air cells do NOT reattach I use an egg carton in the incubator to eliminate the possibility of "drowned chicks". Even loose air cells can hatch if one is careful. This would be one reason I would not put them under a broody after only a few hours and also I would check the air cells with a light.

Hi everyone, Im kind of new to the forum... I mean "kind of" by "I logged in once a long time ago". I just got into Black Copper Marans about 10 months ago. Two weeks ago we hatched out a small clutch of Five from the incubator... 5/5 hatched.. yay! Anyways, I have been reading some random clips about being able to sex black copper marans by feathering at four weeks... What markings should I be looking for? Thanks

Try not to worry too much. I've been hatching for a year now, mostly with shipped eggs, and to me it seems like a 50/50 chance to get a good hatch or not, regardless of what I do. Sometimes none hatch, and sometimes it's around 50% (only once did I get 100% to hatch from shipped-eggs, and I had put them straight into the incubator upon arrival - go figure - but those were BLRW anyway, not marans). With my own eggs at home (not shipped), 100% hatch is normal, but with shipped eggs, 40% is "normal" so I think most of it has to do with how rough they were handled during shipping. With marans eggs, my advice is "don't throw them out if you don't see anything inside when candling". It's hard to see anything through the darker shells, compared to other breeds. Once I cracked open a marans egg that looked empty when candled, and it had a small baby inside! (so sad - my mistake). I would just smell each egg once every few days, and if any smell rotten or start oozing little dots of goo that look like sap, then throw those particular eggs out.

The only Marans that can be feather sexed are Cuckoo and Wheaten, Cuckoo's can be sexed upon hatch and Wheatens can be sexed by about 1 week or so. The other varieties of Marans a person must wait. My Black Copper and Blue Copper cockerels will usually start to show a little fat pinkish comb that is noticeably bigger than the females by about 10-14 days, and usually my females tend to feather up faster than the males.

Good morning, fellow Marans enthusiasts! Okay - what do we think of this Black Copper boy? ALL FEEDBACK welcomed & appreciated - he's only 21 weeks in these pics, so he's got filling out to do yet:

Good comb... good eye, nice lenghth of back, Looks to have a good copper balance... maybe leaning a hair toward black, but he isn't grown... Nice leg feathering... Still filling out I imagine. Good horn color. Good shank color APA pending... Very nice looking... The only improvement I would make it the tail... It seems to have some pretty long feathers over the top... (Definetly something to set aside for show)... This is my opinion..... Everyone else feel free to chime in with their own.
