Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I can't help it.. number one looks like a hen. I do NOT see roo at all.. lets see side view. It looks like a wade jean/presley pen with two style of hens.... the top one looks toward a Presley type with a chunkier build and shorter back with shorter neck.

Hey, Jen! How old are these birds? They look to need more time to mature...I wouldn't make any decisions for awhile.

snowbird and geebs - see?! i know nothing about gender identification. feel like quite a goof here with all the experts.

I saw the comb and thought, male. oops. well, guess it's not a bad thing to have another hen, eh?! I'll try to take some better pics of that one.

thanks for the opinions, appreciate the help.

wynette, they are still young, only about 4 months so yes lots of maturing yet to come. Just wanted to get some ideas on how they look so far. sounds like we still have quite a bit of work ahead of us.

Wynette,

He's a looker! Personally, I like the darker hackle color.

6littlechickies,

Got to agree with the others, I see a pullet in the first pic. They need time to grow into themselves, one of the pullets has too much and too light a coloring on her neck, but they look good to me for the most part!

Pink,

Do you have a link to those "BEAUTY DROPS"??? Fuglee could sure use some! The poor guy is just butt ugly!

Hello everyone!

Haven't been around for a few days because of a chicken crisis! I'm posting for you all cause I just need to vent a bit! My entire flock has Cocci, at least that's what I think. Based on the fact that they are pooping blood.

So I started treating with Corid this morning. I have been at my wits end trying to figure out how this could have happened. Most of my birds are over the age of 7 months and I have never had a problem.

Well my neighbors have chickens and they are not nearly as adamant as I am about keeping the coop, water containers and feeders clean. They also have a rabbit living in the coop with their chickens. Well this rabbit keeps getting out of the coop and decides my fenced backyard is the best place to hang. This started a week and a half ago and now all my chickens are sick.

I think this rabbit brought it from the neighbors coop into my yard!

I just got back from telling the neighbor if I see the rabbit in my yard again I will dispose of it. They were not to happy about it but hey my animals are not roaming their yard!

Okay thanks for listening! While I panic that I am going to lose all my BCMs

they will all be fine.

YIKES, gvntofly05! Sorry you're having that issue. Yup - 7 months is awfully old for Cocci....but Corid works quickly, within 24 hours you ought to see results. If not, I'd get a fresh fecal sample & get it to your vet for testing right away. Yikes!

Yesterday I noticed some blood in the older birds poop and after asking about it we determined it was probably due to worms. I haven't wormed in a while and was waiting until fall.

The older birds are the only ones who I let free range in the yard. Well this am they were pooping almost straight blood and the 8-9 week olds that share a sectioned off portion of the run were showing a little blood in their poop. So I ran to TSC got the Corid, mixed it up and gave it to everyone.

The younger ones don't have blood in their poo anymore and it is less in the older birds. I see quite a few normal looking stools in my run now! So I am pretty confident the Corid is working.

Some were worse off than others, so I am expecting it to take a day or so longer for them to be pooing 100% normal.

So far this is the scariest thing I have had to go through with my chickens! Next payday I am going to grab a packet/bottle of quite a few things just to make sure I have them on hand when needed!
