Now that she's grown, she still has a lot of color. Her breast is mostly copper. Her body feathers are actually very beautiful. Each is a rich, siny black, with a lacing of copper stippling. Not any good for breeding to the standard, but pretty. And, she lays a nice dark egg for my table!

So does mossy mean - - not a " rich Black" with the marans ? ? IS she mossy because of all the copper in the body ? ?

Mossy is too much red or brown where it's not supposed to be, as in the breast and wing area. A black breast on a roo with an abundance of red spots or patches is "mossy". Seems to me it has a lot to do with producing the darker eggs though, and may add some color to black or almost no copper necked hens. I'll let the pros chime in here, but that's what I've garnered so far.

Question here. At what age do you start to worm your birds? Do most use Ivomec? I've used Ivomec on sheep, goats, cattle, and dogs, but never on chickens. Do you use pour on, injectable, or in the mouth? We used to dose the sheep with the injectable orally. How much do you give a chicken?? Could probably use a little myself!

The term "Mossy" is used with other brids, too. I've seen is used for Campines that have blurring between the gold and black bars. Basically red color where is shouldn't be, as Debbi said.

In my girl, she had juvenile baring, too. I don't know if that's related? Apparently that indicates some crossing somewhere along the lines to bring in the pattern gene...

TurkeyMountainChickens , Did that barring go away? I have two that showed barring, and one had spots, like a Guinea! WTH?? The barring/spots on the pullet are almost gone, and on the cockeral they are gone. Maybe some Cuckoo introduced somewhere along the lines?? And how old are those birds now? Do they have any white feathers?
