Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Sorry I didnt see your reply. I sure hope it doesn't. Ultimately I would like to breed for the correct standard but Im also shooting for the proper egg color... I may have to make a choice. I dearly love my roo so I may have my answer.

According to Asmundson, who concluded that side-sprigs are due to the interaction of two Dominant autosomal gene which are complementary in their action, so that when both are present either in the heterozygous or homozygous condition side-sprigs are produced.

Yay! So there's hope... I just hatched out 5 chicks from him. I suppose I will know if the hen carries the gene eventually.

I haven't bred her. She's probably old enough now, but I just put her straight into the laying flock. I am guessing that it's a recessive trait, since she came from non-mossy parents. She doesn't have a single white feather on her. None of my blue or black copper Marans do.

Regarding the mossy and the dark egg, her egg is EXACTLY the same color as her non-mossy sisters!

SO I bought 4 Cuckoo Maran eggs to hatch and only one did... Meet Boadicea .... Our bantam EE is her momma

turkeymountain - hey, I'm catching up on posts...just wanted to say that roo you posted looks GORGEOUS! Have you posted side pics already of him? I'd love to see him in profile. As you all know, I don't claim to be an expert, but from that one pic....WOW!

He's one heck of a good-looking boy!

onthespot - thanks for the feedback on the dark roo I posted with too much melaniser (am I saying tha correctly?). I'm going to go ahead and do a hatch of 6-8 eggs from the one hen I have that's mossy, just to see. I put her in a breeder cage last night where she'll stay for 3 weeks to clear her out (she's in my Jersey Giant pen now, and NO ONE would want to see THAT cross - EEEEK!). So, it'll be a good while before I know the results, but will certainly post when I do.

Cute chick!

Good news to report so far! I didn't lose anyone last night! I'm going to wait a couple more days before I celebrate though.

I can't help but feel like a bad chicken mama. Hubby told me over and over yesterday that things just happen sometimes and I need to quit beating myself up over it. So my way of dealing with it: Bio-security lockdown!

I have banned all neighbor kids from the fenced portion of my yard (The neighbor lets all the kids run in and out of his coop and I know they wear the same shoes everywhere).

I already do the basics like wearing my chicken boots only in the coop and no where else. My kids have also always followed this.

If anyone has any other Bio-security suggestions please let me know.
