Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

First I was drawn to the egg color. Once I hatched my first batch and really started researching the breed I was sucked in. I am one that loves a challenge and breeding BCM's will give me that. My neighbors have Wyandottes, Polish and Australorps and I have EE's and BCM's. Out of all of them I am in love with my BCM's dispositions and personalities. They are sweet and not flighty at all. They are my absolute favorite breed!

Illia Sorry to hear about the Roo thing.... Hey if you get down this area I will give you a girl to go with your boys... No girls??? All boys.. man what a drag...

Thanks everyone for the compliments on my girls... I am sure eggcited for the POL!!!

Illia do you get this way ever? (portland)

Oh and question about the breed: EGG COLOR First it was a breed research and the spotted birds were my first... OMGOSH spotted dark egg layers... Cornucopia... I did the blue pens and the blue copper pens and then I got some Wade birds... That was it!!! I was over the moon for my Wade birds and my Wade/Presley by Donna Gherke... I am still over the moon for them... I can't say enough nice things... The health is my favorite aspect.. Those sturdy little buggers are so healthy and lively and yet as kind as my cochins... LOVE EM>>> EVERY ONE OF EM!!!!

well the ladies forgot about my birthday (19th).....all I wanted is a nice chocolate egg from just one of them (out of 3) but noooooo, it must have slipped their 29 week old minds!

still waiting patiently.

Oh I know! I have been drooling over blue wheatens for a while now. Unfortunately I only have 3 breeder pens though and they are designated for wheatens, black coppers and silkies. Perhaps the silkies can share their space?

I was even noting earlier that my first Bev Davis girl just began laying a few days ago. . . Gorgeous eggs!!

I'm in love with the DARK layers and only have 4 right now. Well, we'll see. . . I might have more. I have wheatens too whose parents laid beautiful eggs, and I also have Wynette's whose parents laid beautiful eggs. . . Who knows. The sad part is that none of my SUPER dark eggs from Wynette hatched. I guess I'll find out once everyone else begins laying . . . All I know is that the BC Bev Davis girls are so far really promising!

I go down as far as Aberdeen on occasion, quite often lately in fact, due to the constant purchase of goats or yaks or such.

Happy Birthday Chickenstalker

Umm, Blue Wheatens can easily be thrown in your Wheaten pen. After all, Blue x Black = Blue and Black, and Blue x Blue = also Blue and Black, with a little Splash too.

I've got my blue and normal Wheatens intermingled right now, because my cockerel is normal wheaten, and I've got a blue wheaten hen - So if someone wants Wheatens - I'll collect from the Wheaten girls. If someone wants Blue Wheatens - I'll collect from the Blue Wheaten girl, and the customer shal get 50 percent Blue Wheatens from her.

Cree has great stock and good egg color and they are only doing the Davis line now... I bought their last two wades....Yep.. I did travel for that one. Lets see some of the girls.. Your boy Maple or was it Mable... was a nice looking bird.... No mean roos allowed though.. Sad but necessary.
