Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Oh ya... FFA does chickens... both market and show. They also display the brooder and incubators that they make. That is a clever group.

My group orders eggs/chicks from the top breeders in the US... We have to bring alot to the table because the other clubs do the same thing. It is really competitive here for animals... We won't even get into the Boer goats. ha ha..

I saw you purchase FROM FLORIDA - - - you are way out in Washinton state - - - Have you tried Cree Farms and their marans? ? I have heard good things about them. I would personally try them - - - but I am in FLORIDA.

Oh by the way - - - still waiting for BYC marans members to get back with me if you have had any experience with any of the marans resources on the EAST COAST of the US. I looking for good and bad references - - I want to hear good and bad. Looking for some Bev Davis blood lines that lay dark eggs. PLEASE PM me - - - if you have dealt with any of the breeders on the East Coast.

I think criker99 was critiquing our use of ENGLISH.

Wow super funny thing is that I was not correcting your use of GRAMMAR. I just thought when I said it the first way it sounded kind of "odd" so I restated to ensure (notice the proper use of ensure instead of insure like most people use) my question was clear.

My daughter has been asking about FFA ... we currently participate in US Pony Club (with horses, not the chickens, those saddles aren't really for what they sound like) and 4-H with horses and chickens. And apparently she doesn't think we are busy enough so asked about FFA. Maybe we'll check it out!

One thing I have wondered about - in other breeds the pullets grow out their tail feathers before the cockerels, but of the 3 GCMs I have, one that I am sure is a pullet and one other have very short tail feathers even now, and the other, which I am pretty sure is a cockerel, has long straight tail feathers. Is that what I should expect from the males vs females??

Do you have photos of the birds in question that you can share?? Can you see longer pointy feathers coming in around the saddle area? Are any of the long tail feathers starting to curve downward toward the top?

At last I went out and photo'd my GCMs this evening. I will post them in order - the one that I am sure is a pullet, one I am sure is a cockerel, and the one that looks like a cockerel in the head end and a pullet in the tail end! (I guess it is the tail end that is really the important one, isn't it!)

Please let me know what you think. The cockerel grew out long tail feathers, as you will see, along with pointy saddle feathers fairly early. The other two have vastly different combs and wattles, but both have short tail feathers and no pointy saddle feathers. My original question was about the tail feathers, but I am so curious about the one that seems to have both pullet and cockerel characteristics. When they were chicks, pasofinofarm (the breeder) and others thought I had 2 pullets and one cockerel; you can see the chick photos here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=4169240#p4169240

I
should add that they hatched May 7 or 8 - the day before Mother's Day.
