Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Picture of our cuckoo marans Charlie. You'll see there is a post on the what breed is this link because my husband believes it is a barred rock rooster, but it was sold to us as a cuckoo marans. We've had him about 20 months, so ever since he was a young cock, not quite crowing. He is huge, towering over all of our other chickens (all full size chickens, no bantys here) and super sweet.

However, I don't know enough about the Cuckoo Marans to know how quality he is. I would like to take him out of the mixed flock and use him in a marans breeding flock (as soon as I get marans hens for him). Thoughts?

That looks like a Barred Rock to me .... look how straight those lines in the tail are ..... they don't look Cuckoo to me. Barred Rocks are suppose to have yellow legs, but I can attest to you that not all of them do!

Looks like an English Cuckoo the legs, comb and type are not what a Barred Rock would be. I really love my English Cuckoo boy very nice guy good to me and his ladies and the reason I decided to get into Marans. I only hope my French Cuckoos grow up as nice.

Congrats on your youngins! I hope you continue to share them as they mature and start laying. Do they have coppering in their heads and necks?

That looks like a lot of copper color around their necks and chests. I'd be interested to see what they look like with their adult plumage.

Kathy, how are your Barred rocks developing, are the legs getting any more yellow than before. You should of been told that they were experimental.

As a matter of fact, surprisingly to me, they are beginning to turn yellow (a little bit anyway). I do not believe that the 2 breeders I purchased from would be considered experimenting.

My breeding goals are the following in order:
1. Egg color
2. Egg productivity
3. Breeding to standard
We may never show just sell eating eggs. But still want to do the breed a service..

OK These Blue Marans birds are about 15 weeks old. This first guy matured early and is the largest. (Heck he was crowing clearly at 7 weeks?) He is reaching sexual maturity and trying to mount hens. His down side is he has copper bleeding through on the neck.

OK Cockerel #2 He is smaller slower to mature. Crowing but not attempting breeding. Submissive. No copper bleeding through on neck. Smaller comb and wattles. (Which I see as a plus in my very cold climate.
