Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Here are some of the pullets. A few have no copper bleeding through. Most do have some copper.

Pinkchick: You better not be lactose intolerant because if you are... you are going to be very ill.... Sorry the Dairy women of Oregon were there with their big chocolate swirl ice cream... and you had a HUGE one!!!! ha ha... Lots of Donkey poop and Huge Driving horse contests... Awesome!! My favorite was the equestrian in full regala both Paso Fino and Arabian native classes... So sweet... maran marans.. (does that make it less of a hijacking) I came home to a few eggies laid during the day...

ON... What is your breeding goal? In order to understand what one should do it is important to know what one wants to do.

What is the desire of your heart for your pen... Egg color with copper/blue, showing, eggs??? All blue birds... Blue, black, splash pens????

You have a really nice solid blue colored pullet I am smitten on. I agree with Criker about the early cockerels, if it is the most correct but again I caution you if it is the only two. I always have something in reserve or a source for the same birds, preferrably relatives.

Goal:
Well egg color first. Secondly productivity. (I sell eating eggs. Just happen to want real pretty birds to look at..

) I do not know if my boys will take an interest in showing in the future? Will we sell hatching eggs or chicks in the future?..Maybe, if I get something semi consistent and decent going with the flock....At least I do want to try and do "my part" to improve the BB/S line of Marans...... These birds come from a BYC member who bred Black and splash to get all blue birds. I like all three colors. (It is why I am addicted to blue!)

At this point in time I do not have that much "vested" in the flock, so I prefer to winter only one of the cockerels. I will heed your advice on keeping a backup in the future when I have more vested in the flock. My plan is to breed the keeper cockerel to the top 2 or three hens and hatch those eggs, and see were I am then. If need be I am open to finding a better rooster next year.. (Especially if I have something special in one of the pullets..

This is a great group of ppl. I like the way everyone (for the most part) gets their ideas across mostly w/o defaming. The great thing about Marans is that whether you breed to show or whether you breed for egg color or whether you want to cross them to make Olive eggers... Marans are great... let's try to keep the "hackle feathers" down and not fall into the baiting that shuts down good threads like this. let's try to keep a civil finger ppl.

But doing well overall. Sorry that I haven't replied to you as I should have, I've worked mostly in the AM the past couple days and have been completely out of it afterwards. Thanks for saying hello!
