Hi criker99, The hen is a young french black copper pullet named Cheepa. Here is a few pics of her awhile back. She is a real sweetie.

Hi

That's a nice egg from a white Marans. I have often wondered why the egg from a lighter colored bird isn't as dark as a black copper. I have asked the genetic experts and they say there isn't a link between egg and feather color but I am not sure.

Thank you. She is all black except that little bit of coppering on the back of her neck. Feel free to use her name

Cheepa was named that because that is the sound she made: kind of a Cheeeepaaa when she was little. When I hatched her, the humidity was miscalculated in my LG incubator (my fault...it was a new bator and I wasn't used to it) and she needed help out of the egg. She was weak and a little small too. I had her separted for a little while from the others while she gained her strength and she would call out because she was lonely. So dh started calling her Cheepa and it stuck. She has caught up to the others I have, in size now, so I guess she is normal lol.

i was wondering if any one here is dealing with the problem of feather shank inhibitor gene in there flock ? and are you culling because of it ?it so happens that one of my hens that has nice feather shanks
throws a few clean leg birds sometimes . it still baffles me why that happens every once in a wile ..
I know nothing about genetics but I think one hen carries one copy of that feather shank inhibitor gene on the allele that controls the trait for feather legs .so I was wondering if the chances could be the same that my one roo that’s the one that carries the shank inhibitor or if its just as likely ?i narrowed it down from one roo and 3 hens
It seems to happen to one of two hens I have I just haven’t narrowed it down yet .
So I would guess that the of feather shank inhibitor gene would pass to the siblings also ...thanks for your input !

I am rather proud of my copper balance... It was as Bev told me and very predictable... I used the too red rooster on the not enough red hens and the offspring were great... Thanks again Bev... I am very happy with the results.

Okay Bev... Talk to me about the Birchen Gene..... This came up from my January hatch... I haven't seen another one...Just the one... How does this happen genetically... ????? ... I like the substance...Maybe a little too much color down the chest... The birchen is dominant is it not... This hen is removed from the breeding program.... But I thought I would show it as the back and angle of the tail is what I like. This pullet is 7 months old.

This picture lacks quite a bit in composition, I apologize, However it does show the even copper color of the saddle to the hackle... I have successfully improved the color of the male... I am very happy with my offspring though there are still many points to work on. Just thought I would share the fruit of my labor.
