Well that and I do like the Marans, but I'm not too invested in them from a breeding stand point.
If I had a hen house full of #9 layers (even if they were green, with purple spots and came from Timbuktu) I would be content.
For me, it's all about the eggs.

I really wish I could find some Wheatens with a more consistent egg color, I think by far they are much more beautiful than the Black Coppers.

Maybe if both of us try for the best, we can do it locally with both factors in mind! I know how you feel, been there, done that too, if only for a short time! Have had decently colored eggs from the get go, buuuuttt... The first batch is now 10 weeks old, and those funny colored chicks, well, the pullets any way, are starting to look really good! Poor roo (Fuglee) was/is deformed somehow, looks like a dowager's hump behind his neck and he walks cock-eyed when he runs. Thing is, he was shrink wrapped for hours and had to be helped out a bit. Don't know if that's his problem, or mine? He is getting really nicely colored, and all of those chooks came from at least a 6 colored egg, and he was a 7 or better. He is also a very sweet boy temperament wise too, so will see how he matures out. Need a good roo for these girls, as they are looking very good at 10 weeks! Will have to get some pics of them all. Now that I know more of what I want/need, I have made some better choices for the future. Can't wait for them!!

One of my one year old girls. She lays a pretty nice egg, probably a 6 consistently.

My only (mature) BCM rooster and some of his girls. I was offered $50. for him, just because he is so sweet and purdy (by someone who knows nothing about Marans conformation, BTW). We will keep him forever. We just love him.

Egg color is less now than it was a couple months ago. I dunno ... 5 - 6.
