Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The whole photo has a sort of green/brown tinge, in my opinion. I think the leg color looks fine, but the earlobe either needs some time to redden or is indeed a fault. Didn't quite realize that.

SO... So Sorry about your little Bayhorsebonne.

It must be the lighting on the post the girls are very black ... I won't be breeding just want dark eggs. and they came from very dark ones soooo maybe I will get them... Thanks everyone.. Great information! Eyes are dark.. I haven't noticed the earlobe..I'll have to take a look later..

Unfortunately, feather sexing only works for American breeds - doesn't work for Marans. On the foot color thing...I had a Marans breeder on BYC tell me that FOR SURE I had just hatched a pullet....due to the foot color...guess what? It ended up to be a HUGE rooster! Let me see if I have a pic, it was a neat pic, just coming out of the shell....YUP! Here's the pic:

I was UBER excited about this hatch, it was a line that is renowned (German line) for being really good...but, sadly, only one hatched, it was a cockerel (which is what I wanted), but he was probably the poorest example of a Marans I'd ever seen. Sigh....

Well now I am totally disgusted.

The feathers looked so different. I thought it was all the chicken breeds.

Oh crapper. I hope I can at least get a couple of hens. Last time was disappointing. I had like 6 roos and ONE HEN. Thanks for sharing the info. It's always nice to learn. I think they should only be allowed to lay pink and blue eggs then we would know. Grrrr.

Ok well it ends up with I have TWO MALES AND 4 FEMALES like I said. It would be a huge coincidence if the feather sexing was wrong. I had to cull one of the males. He was doing serious damage to one of the other chicks. I am sure the feather sexing works here. I am going to hatch out some more later in the year and see if I can feather sex them. I mean the feathers were so different and it ended up just as I had said. 2 males 4 females -1 cull. Has anyone else tried the feather sexing on their chicks and had any luck. Anyway I am thrilled with my little family of 5 bcm's.

The wheaten Marans rooster will have a wheaten colored triangle in the wing tip when he's standing at rest. The Black Copper does not.

Thanks guys, anyone have a pic of their wheaten roosters for me.

I have a BCM roo, fully matured, and have 3 week old wheaten maran chicks in my brooder. 6 boys, 5 girls I think.

I would really love a few BCM pullets for my own use, would it be a big no-no to breed my BCM roo to a wheaten hen? I mean will undesirable traits pop up? Not that it matters if I am keeping them for their eggs I guess.

coq au vin - LOL!!!

Anyone wanna critique my BCM roo? His name is Pedro and he wasn't feeling well in these pictures so he looks a lot puffier than he usually does. I think he got into a funky mushroom or something cuz he was completely better in two days.

This last pic is him with no tail when I first got him. The dominant rooster ate it.
