Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Here is the BC color Standard submitted by the MCC. I don't see where it mentions undercolor on the body. It should. It also does not address white feathers in the tail and wings....it should. At t his point without a complete description from the club, I can only say that white feathers in the wing or tail would be a fault in each section.

Thank you Wynette, the reason he was a cull (not now) was that he was much smaller than the others I am choosing from.

I have 10 BCMarans Roos to pick from and want to start narrowing it down. I would really appreciate any opinions on who to keep and who to cull. Right now I only have one that is a certain cull because he has virtually no color in him and I didn't post pics of him.

Here are some pictures of what I am working with right now and what I have to decide from. I know some are over red but I want to keep one of them to breed with the over dark girls and see what happens.

If I have gotten pictures of Roos mixed up, please forgive me. It is confusing at times!

This pen has #7 blue and #1 blue. I think #7 is the nicest of all the roos but... they keep changing!

#1) 7 blue

This is my first pen with Roos I am saving. It includes # 22 pink who is over red, 3 blue who is fairly nice but not as big as some even though he looks big, 18 green who I think is great, and "Dark Eyes" who I think is great except for his dark eyes--the reason I am keeping him for now is that I hatched him from the darkest egg that I have ever seen in person, it was Hershey Cocoa dark.

OK Germaine, you have a ton of pics here, but not the best angles to make a determination. Here is what I have come up with based on what I can see.
#7 blue: Good body, it has a tail break and what color are the eyes?
#1 blue: Pinched tail and it could be shalloow in the underline.
#3 green: Comb problem and I can't tell too much more from the pics.
#22 pink: eye color? tail break, but appears to have a good body.
Dark eye: good body, tail break.
The cull that is loose. The photo's are not at an angle that I can make a decent evaluation.

There seems to be comb problems with some of the males, so I would use that to cull. I would also look very closely at the females as the comb fault will be there too......just not as obvious.

I have subscribed to the thread, so I should see all the posts. I am proofing the revised SOP, so I will not have as much time for the next week or so. I do see that the BC color description needs more detail and I will contact the person who prepared that.

If you are addressing my birds, it isn't unsanitary-- they are pens and they are molting.

Germaine, nice birds! I agree ignore! These are the types who diaper their birds.

Thank you Walt. I need to go see which ones are which and respond. I know that they all need work and I was going with the "type" rule first.

Am I correct that I should pick the ones with the best body type first? I know it is almost impossible to tell from pictures but there are a few with really good big bodies and wing carriage, then I have been looking feather color, eye color and covert color so as to get a Marans that will breed others with good color. Next would be comb? And last the shank feathering?

Do I have this right or all mixed up? Thank you very much

Germaine, you are right about the type being the first thing to work on. The comb can be worked on at the same time by just culling the fowl with real bad combs, mainly the lopped and twisted. First thing to go with is a nice broad back and full chest with width. For color you will always get some of all three colors in the Black Coppers, Straw, Copper and Mahogany and there is no way around it that I know of yet. You can use some of all of these colors in your breeding program. Looks like you have a very good start.

Wow, so nice to see someone show all their culls - And actually have culls that aren't screaming "kill it now! my eyes!"

Walt, I don't want to sound ignorant but I am not sure what a tail break is. would it be this?:I also see white in the hackle and saddle feathers in this picture.

33539_dscn9633.jpg

#7's eyes are pumkin/bay (and I don't know how to differentiate those two colors either)

#1 blue--Yes I see what you mean and his comb is not good either. Thanks--out he goes

# 18 green-- (bird #3) The comb problem--would it be too many points or too big--or both? Thanks again!

#22 pink He does have a nice shape. His eyes are pumkin/bay. I was concerned about the tail angle. It seems too high (60 degrees or more?) and he also has alot of red in his breast.

Walt, here are the "cull" pictures. Will these work?
