These tactics can be used on humans as well! lol When I was younger I had quite a few friends who modeled professionally and they had sorts of emergency tricks involving make-up, tape and various torture devices to lend the illusion of a "perfect" body. It was mind numbing! I tried one once...lets just say the insane perkiness was not worth peeling tape off a place it was never meant to be!

For now we still need our best out to show and filling cages.

Agreed, in order to get this breed promoted the best representations of what we have need to be out there. Getting them out there and recognised is a benefit to everyone who shows or doesn't show but strives towards the standard, as judges, breeders and everyone else here are learning about this breed together ......it will be easier IMO to move forward as a whole to improve upon this magnificent breed of birds.

edited to add: I wanted to say Thank you to all of you who do show your birds.....your time and commitment and promotion of this breed is greatly appreciated.

How many times has everyone shown a bird who has this as an issue?
I show three times this year. Never did before. Didn't know about this "TACTIC" as you non show types say. THEN I had someone, who wins BIG APA Shows come up and tell me what to do to be more competative. Then I remember seeing many breeders fussing with their birds before these shows. EVEN without using this "TACTIC (lololol I love it! lololol), I still managed to get one Reserve Best of Breed against, IF not the best, one of the best Orpington breeder's in the country and his two birds.
So this is for the folks who will Exhibit their birds. And whether you non showing people like it or not, I want those of US who do show on this thread know what you are up against. Whether you like it or not. This is important to our breed to put out a gorgeous and competative bird. And many who show will tell you that this is not uncommon. And MAY be more the norm then not. I haven't never attempted to show a bird using this "TACTIC". But will to advance the showability of my best birds from now on to be on the same level playing field.

Once you start playing with the marans there is NO GOING BACK to other breeds. They have a super unique personality and for a LARGE BIG BIRD they sure can jump high and watch out they will steal treats out of you hand quicker than you can blink . . .. LOVE them

Bev Davis use to tell you to send money when she was ready to send the chicks. . . . I know of others that collect right before they send also. . . . I don't know of anyone who requires a deposit . . . . How about the rest of ya'll ? ? ?

WOW - - - I am feeling some unkind vibes in the MARANS thread today. . . . .
This thread was not set up for showing Marans. It has been more about breeding them and HONESTLY meeting the standards.

I, too, won't get into a negative argument over this . . . I agree with Debbie . . .
There is something dishonest about hiding a fault that would Disqualify a bird from a competition.

The practice is no different than altering a picture - - - like making eggs look DARKER than they really are
I won't do it . . . that is just my morality.

It kinda reminds me of my children's logic when they say "it is only cheating if they get caught doing it". I, personally, don't need to win that bad - - - EVER.

So Debbie,

, I'll stand with you on this. It looks like it will be lonely where we are standing, but I am ok with that.

Marans can't get into the Standard without people showing them plain and simple....since there wasn't a proposed standard until recently and they were rare and popular when some people got them they didn't know about culling correctly they just bred them and they sold them because people would buy them at a good price how did you know what you were looking for?..........If I ever get one good enough to show I will I don't know of any qualifying show for Cuckoos only Wheatons and Black Coppers. I really think this thread should be encouraging people to show after we get the birds up to standard or else it will never be anything but mutts not an APA approved breed. Yep there are things at all shows that are not great but that is done face it people like to win and sometimes anything will be done to get that win including a lot of hard work. There are many people on this board who have shown horses lets not get into all the things that are done to those poor creatures to get a win. If you don't like what's done get out there and show.....not all showmen or women are like that some do it the right way way but it takes longer and not all people have the money to wait. There are things I do for beauty's sake when I show that I would never do just at home but when you go to show you must look the part, walk the walk etc or you are just wasting your time not counting your money. Nothing beats that feeling when you win over somebody who just might be your friend knowing that you did it yourself it makes all that sweat and maybe tears worth it. So let's just agree to disagree, nicely, politely and leave politics out of it....If you had a great looking bird with one feather that was wrong and knew you could win if that feather wasn't there......it is a slippery slope and we are humans anyway.....Remember some of those old time breeders who had hundreds or thousands of birds had a showline bred just for show..wonder why?

Thank you Math Ace! I feel an honest win would be soooo much more meaningful, so I guess we do stand alone on that one. To each his own...

Lotsapaints you are right. It will take the time and work to make these birds better accepted in the Show room. And the point is to get our best ADULT Marans out to show. With the mix into the gene pool and the lack of attention to detail in whom to use, we do have alot of folks who just throw them together. many are so new to Marans. And that includes taking your birds to Shows and most importantly getting an APA judges opinion. IF nothing less then getting your bird into his/her hands to evaluate and tell you what they don't like and you need to work on. I am not here to impress someone who has never raised a Marans to even lay an egg. It is to tell many who have Adults that are high quality to get your best birds out to shows and enjoy them. And what to expect. And this thread is about discussion of Marans. And I agree you will see more popularity go back into the breed the more we show.
