I have NEVER had one lay anywhere near that early....

It is unfortunate that Straw will be allowed as only a fault but that is fine since there are soooo many faulted birds... The creme will rise to the top... It speaks of Wheaton... I can see yellow being allowed or gold but not STRAW... It speaks of a gene that shouldnt be there. Mahogany is the other end of the spectrum of gold with copper lying in between... Straw isn't part of the spectrum it is my understanding.

Math Ace, I wouldn't call Harley's tail a squirrel tail. To me, it looks like the base feathers and sickle feathers are a bit too long and loose. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but the squirrel tail is anything much above the 45% angle that leans over the back.

As for the comb, the hens are also supposed to have a 5 pointer. I would also assume, that since 50% of the genes are coming from the hen, she will be contributing to the combs of both sexes. Best to breed the best to the best, and hope for the best, cause we all know it doesn't work quite a bit of the time!

Geebs,

LOL!! Well she'd better head for the neighbors house then, NO eggs here at all! But, if she does lay an egg, she WOULD be going into the breeding pen, just based on an early lay if nothing else!

So, I have a Blue Copper marans hen that is mossy. She has nice coppering in her neck, but there is mossy in her body feathers.
If I wanted to fix her offspring, I would mate her with a roo like Harley ? ??

Why - - because he has so much mahgonay ? ? ?

Would that work with a hen who did not have nice coppering in her neck too ? ?

I cull all the Mossy female and do not use in my breeding program. If you have a female with very little color in Hackle breed to a male with the copper spot on breast and not talking about the brown breast either. I do not see how you can get anything worth feeding from a Mahogany male and a dark hackle female, I do not breed this kind of mating.

Got it - -I think. Does anybody know where I could see a picture of a "square tail" ?

Thanks:thumbsup

Look at page 20 of the APA Standard and it shows most of the faults and DQ points.

Just adding for anyone that does not have a copy, the definition, pg 11

SQUIRREL TAIL: One in which any portion projects forward of the vertical from its anterior base,
a disqualification except in Japanese Bantams.

The illustration that Don refers to on pg 20 shows the tail protruding toward the body from 90 degree angle.
