Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

It is cool.. I am not that much of a stickler on semantics... I get it.. It will be nice to see what you get... You are sure working with a nice set of roos... I don't remember your girls though...

My girls. . .

The "Bev Davis" girls are kind of a joke to look at. . .

^ Giving me the stink eye for saying that.

They've got little to NO coppering, and some have really bad combs. I mean DQ combs.

This is the average BD pullet around here though.

Then there's some other girls who I have yet to photograph, they're turning out really nice.

Oh and my oldest pair of girls. I'm not breeding them, and even the body will answer why:

Wow... that last hen looks like a black star!!!!

Ya I see what you mean... Maybe the roosters will improve them... a little red flecking in the chest will probably produce a better hackle... I have some really big combs on my original breeders... My generations are better.. I like this rooster I am using.... He isn't much to look at by himself but he produces nnnnice offspring... I am really liking the type I am getting.

I am probably reposting a pic so please excuse the repost but my favorite pullet is in the middle and yes it's an old pic and she is filled in nicely... still has a smallish comb and good foot feathering...

Oh and folks ignore the hen to the right with the white earlobes.. She is our Cochorn.. A white egg layer.. daddy was a cochin and mama is a leghorn.... She give me an egg a day and is easier on the eye than a standard brown leghorn.

Illia...
I love the white toenails... I don't know what the standard says if anything but I love the contrast and the look of the second hen... were you holding a bucket of KFC? She was sure giving you the look!!!

Illia- Thank you for explaining about the red, that is exactly what I need! I get it! Your blue wheaten roo is georgeous!!!!!!!!How do you get a Blue Wheaten? I think I remember reading something about a bc and a splash making blue? If there is discussion about this I missed just tell me I will go back I am sure I have missed alot.
Can you tell me what is wrong with your hen's combs? And, I hear talk of a five point comb, how do you determine how many points there are? Do you count every point even the itty bitty nubs?

To everyone else trying to keep up, I was on here last night and suddenly I noticed it said "posted yesterday" and I thought, no I just posted that! Then I noticed the time....
And I am back on hereby 8am and have actually been able to keep up, but nothing to heavy going down yet. I need a direct feed to my Ipod!

Maybe, we need three marans threads - - - A beginning, intermediate, and advanced threads.

x4 on the hard to keep up the sheer volume of posts... However bring it on! With the great lessons and critiques relating to breeding Marans... (Really this is nothing, go read threads on a genetics forum once.)

The problem with a beginning and an advanced thread would be all the people we need to tell us if our birds are any good would be on the advanced thread... The rest of us would be telling each other "Oh he is so cute" "oh what a pretty bird" Whether or not the bird is a mutt, or a genetic mutant, that's offspring may never be anything near to the standard.

Because of the honest critiques of various birds posted I am beginning to get an eye of what a good bird looks like..

I am thankful for the "advanced" group who put up with the not so advanced...(such as myself..)

Hi All, anyone up for a discussion on the different aspects of the Marans tail section. There are several other things that influence the shape of the tail.

We can do this where it is understanding for all, If you have a question just ask, the only dumb question is one that is not ask.
