sadie1000 Welcome.. On shipped eggs it is a grab bag... Also Marans are really hard to hatch....Humidity is an issue... Keeping enough moisture in the bator can be a challenge if you are using foam... also resting the eggs 24 hours etc.... There are a few things you can do to up the ante so to speak... For the humidity challenge I use a wet towel over the unit and for loose air cells in shipped eggs I hatch in cartons (sterilized). There are other things.. but for now concentrate on the ones you did have hatch...that gives you six marans!!! yay!!!

Would love to see some pictures..

Im confused myself. Heres Ruth's post from 5/24/09:

I am thrilled to report that I will be buying Mr. Jesse's beautiful flock. It is an honor for me to be able to acquire these birds. I was one of the first to buy from Mr. Jesse when he first posted on this thread and, ironically, I will be one of the last to buy from him. I'm so sorry he and his wonderful wife have to give up on this business and the birds they love so well. But I know the birds were well loved and cared for and they will be here as well.

We are currently making arrangements to have new breeder pens and housing built for them and Mr. Jesse has kindly agreed to keep them for another 2-3 weeks till we can get ready for them and go and pick them up.

In the meantime, he is still taking orders for chicks so if you are interested, please buy them from Mr. Jesse.

I'll keep everyone updated once the birds are settled into their new home.

Monique "Ruth"

Im thinking maybe the previous posts have been "tongue in cheek", and Im too dense to get it. No surprises there. All I know is what Ruth has now is just gorgeous.

Something went over my head.

Thanks - - - this is soooooo hard to get. Maybe, I will just have to go get a wheaton of my own - - -

Thanks Nancy on the PEARL LEGS AND BEAK TOO - - that helps !

I have Buddy Henry/Bev Davis lineage for my wheaten marans....... I may have a spare boy, if yes, then I will give you a reasonable price for him.... ...Many of our spares have been sold and I will need to do a count before I make a firm offer. Let me know if you are interested and I'll do some counting tomorrow. Nancy

No, I don't think it was a sale, I think she found them under a Bethel bush.

Neither - they were here when we moved in. Came with the place. The Marans and the ghosts. Both have been here for over a hundred years.

But now......if I go and win......at a show like Newnan.....or anywhere in the near future......I don't want to hear a single person say they are someone else's birds.

...................

Now this is why I need to stay up late at night....This was soooommmm e party I missed......Sigh how do you all stay up so late, or better question why do I get upppp soooo early 5:00 am this morning.....Stumbling in the dark feeding critters! and packing up for a farmers market....what a life....LOL I'm about sleepy, maybe if I nap now, I can get back up.....

Ruth keep looking around that place, you might find some more critters.... I found some cs's over at the post office..........Love you gal....Nancy

Thanks Nancy. I have so much more to learn about the plain BCM, that I just can't move on to any other marans yet. I am concerned about the wheaton because I know sometimes they show up on a BCM hatch - - although they are not suppose to! I don't want to miss identifing it if it happens to me. I am getting ready to do my first BCM hatch and then I will have to do some culling to better the flock. I am, like RUTH, trying to figure out what the rules / standards are so that I can do a good job culling and breeding.

I know I will be back with lots of pics in the near future - - - each will say
"What's wrong? is it fault or DQ? Cull or Breed ?"

I don't feel overwhelmed because there are some great and SMART people here to help me along my way. . . .

So, I am staying with BCM ONLY for a while

I am thinking about starting some Delawares in my flock. . . .I will starve to death on my marans egg production and my poor leghorns had such a hard time with the heat this past summer.
