Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Your blue boy is beautiful Pinkchick. I can not wait for some blues. I just wanted share a photo of some eggs my blue-splash just started laying. They are not dark enough. I wanted to show her perfect little tiny egg she produced. In the upper left corner. It so makes me want to have bantam marans.

I didn't know they could lay such small eggs.

I can't get enough blue either. I'm hooked! Sooooooo, when you say you have bred blue into ALL of the lines you are working on......you have actually bred it into the Golden Salmons too?!?!?!? Please tell me that you have....ohhhhh please say yes! I think I would be in my version of "BLUE" HEAVEN" with those.

Hi

There is a solid blue, copper blue, blue birchen, blue wheaten, golden blue salmon, silver blue salmons, blue columbian and blue tailed buff. The latter ones are still being perfected, there is a lot to get right when developing a line. Egg color, feather color, size, conformation, tail, eye, comb and so on. It's a challenge but some of the aspects of the bird have already been perfected in previous generations. It's not like starting from scratch each time although I sometimes lose egg color and have to breed for that again.

If you keep up with the BLUES, you will need to consider changing your name to "bluechick"

Hi everyone. I am rather new here and posted awhile back that I had bought some Black Copper eggs from Wynette on the Auction. It was actually for 6 BCM and 6 Olive Eggers and she sent me 7 of each. Tonight at 7PM starts day 21 from when I put the eggs in but two BCM have already hatched. Two of those Olive Eggers eggs are started hatching also. The others haven't started yet. There are four more Black Copper Marans eggs as one was totally clear and never did nothing so I had taken it out before lockdown.

This is my very first hatch

And it seems like such a wonderful thing when those eggs turn into little guys, so great to watch.

I am really hoping for girls as I want to start a small backyard flock. I want a mixed up egg basket. And I wanted pretty girls to lay those eggs, after all its the chickens as well as the eggs I will be looking at. Who am I kidding, they will be spoiled pets. Well, not the roosters if I get any. I will have to give those away.

So, a couple years ago I decided to get a small flock for laying-figured the kids would enjoy it and I'd get eggs-win, win. So I bought a backyard mix and so enjoyed them as they crossed back and forth across my property. Somehow I came to the realization that I had no dark colored birds and wouldnt that be a pretty addition. On craigslist I happened upon an ad for some black chickens, 4 mos old, just up the street from me...Score! He only had two left but that would be just fine. He told me they were black marans and went on about how special they were. So home I go with my two new girls and within days I fell in love-they would follow me everywhere, singing on my heels! What were these great birds? Enter google and the furthering of my love affair with marans, he was so right, they are special indeed! 25 days ago, I finally made the jump and got 27 fertile BCM eggs into the bator and today...only 4 have made it. What could I have done wrong? Yes I know there are lots of variables but I have done this with my dad for years on his farm and was sooo careful with the details on hatching my own-I am so very saddened but such a huge loss, those poor little chicks! Anyhow, on the brighter side-they are cute as can be and we are loving every minute of having them so far. Sorry to go on and on...they are just so great and I'm so enjoying looking at all the beautiful birds and eggs on this site-thanks so much everyone for your hard work!
