Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

How interesting about the split wing! I had never even thought to look at any of mine for that. Do the judges open the wings and look at them? I'm sure they probably do. I need to go to some shows LOL! Thanks for sharing that with us.

I'm not sure. I think French. I love the look of this rooster. But they said theirs wasn't laying good right now.

That bird isn't the proper color pretty though look here for what it should look like http://frenchmaransclubaustralia.yolasite.com/notes-on-breeding.php and scroll way down the page to find it

Yeah that's like a pastel cuckoo or something.

,

I was just wondering if you hatched that egg the other day. What is your boy looking like? Any pics of him??

The split wing, weak wing and twisted wing are all genetic faults and all chickens are subject to having it show up. I will not go into what the genetics experts say to do with the flock. My Mentors taught me this is caused by breeding too close or inbreeding for an extended amount of time. The way to stop it from showing up is to get a male from a different flock and hopefully one with some of the same bloodlines you are breeding and cross over your line. They will still have this fault but it will not show up and that is all I need. If you breed this blood into your fowl you can breed it out mostly in five year. Then you can go back and do it all over again.

If you keep inbreeding the birds with this fault they will get worse each generation. It is real simple to keep from showing up.

Also should of said that usually the first thing a judge does when taking a bird out of the cage is spread the wing to take a look.

Hi Don,

So the split wing, is it a deformity of the bone or is it missing feathers, or what? Sure isn't something I want or need!

Debbi, It would not be the bone. It is a genetic fault affecting the wing from the last joint. Sometime the feather is missing on the split. I have seen birds where the primary feathers are actually riding on the outside of the secondary feathers. The split wing and weak wing can be spotted real early as soon as the wing feathers come in, no need to wait for a Juvi molt. Cull as soon as you can and save feed.
