Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks Don. What does the "weak wing" look like. I think I may have that problem in my cull roo "Fuglee". I could see it in him at a very young age, like when his primaries started coming in. He acted like his wings were too heavy to hold up next to his body. He would even trip over them when he walked. Is that the weak wing?? He IS a cull for sure for many other reasons as well!

Since there seems to be some interest in talking about Marans faults. The proposed standard say the female is not to be faulted for having a lopped comb while laying. This does not include the Marans with the back of the comb or blade that is turned sideways, This is a fault. I am not a believer is the theory that it is only a small point deduction so do not worry about it. If you ad up all of the point deductions even though they are small, they can become large.

Something to ponder = If you ever show chickens on a steady basis and are a breeder you will know more than most Judge's that will judge your bird about the particular bird. This is not a knock on judges it is just common sense.

sorry had a dufus moment.

With the split wing or weak wing the primary will droop down and will not be pulled back up under the secondary. There is more to it than an opening between the primary and secondary. Like I said earlier the primary can also close outside of the secondary.

So if you have a nice young cockerel with that lopped partly over comb it looks like a beret how heritable will it be he's 4 months and it just showed up...or should I just sharpen my knife. I sure have problems with getting a nice roo this one is my nicest biggest so far Golden
