I bought Wade Jean/ Bev Davis French Black Copper Maran eggs from a reputable person in WV. So, far two Wheatens(?) and two Black Coppers hatched. I just learned of the Wheaten gene and honestly now I am beginning to wonder. This person had Buff Orpingtons also. Maybe he slipped some in and sold them as BC's? Hopefully, it was an honest mistake. What are the chances of 2 out of 4???????
I drove many hours and to another state to get these darn eggs!

Debbi, yes I brought in what was supposed to be one of the best lines and I got all of the white in Tail and wing. The only male I used on that hatch.

In the past three year I have hatched and grew out over 1000 BC and have yet to get a Wheaten out of them. I notice you said reputable breeder.

Don,
This person is a member of Marans of America Club and has their own website. Needless to add, I am very disappointed. Whatever they are, they are not thriving.
Thanks, for the input.

Sorry about your black copper throwing a few unexpected wheaten coming from Wv ,I do hear a few lines did that or still do that and it might be a mistake and hopefully a answer if u contacted them . I know nothing about Bc and next to nothing about wheaten but if u posted a few pictures it might help the breed identification .i myself have only wheaten from 2 lines and a few f1 cross of the 2 lines .i culled from 45 to 8 for winter , I am small time but I will not mix any birds I call sports , to me they are to closely related to bc but please take no offence , they are just my thoughts on the bc sports
Or anyone who is keeping there bc sports to create a line
but I am sure my fellow Wv will get back to u

Thanks Don and Geebs for sharing on culls it really looks like Marans fit in with other breeds 1 out of 10 is a good one...the culls should still be good for laying or eating. The books say it takes 7 generations to breed those faults out who on here is close to that? When you get past the 7th generation does your cull pen have more space? Other long time breeders of other breeds raise out 50 to 75 for replacements and every 3rd year raise over 150 and if your stock lives for 8-10 years and is still productive just how many replacements would a person need anyways? I just need to know how much more room I need for pens I already bought another freezer

I always believe in contacting the breeder before "wondering" too much. If it was an honest mistake - - they will make it right.

Most some pictures on here and we can help identify what you have . . . .

Do let us know how the breeder handles the situation . . . . . .
