Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Quote:
The proposed USA standard left out the part about the BC having the flame in Hackle and Saddle should state Copper with black stripe or Black feather with Copper edge. There should be enough showing so you can see it in a picture is the easiest way to describe. Maybe someone on the inside could ask Bev Davis why it is left out.

Don, if it was left out, I'm sure it was not intentional. To me, if something is not specifically called out, it is open for interpretation of the breeder - Walt, thoughts on this idea?

Hi Don

If you wanted some input on the standard you should have joined the club. All members were invited to comment on the proposed standard and that was announced on the yahoo group for which I know you were a member.

yep, i have two of your OE's like that wynette and they are just adorable! the one I actually thought I messed up somewhere b/c it looked just like my black Amer but finally started getting some hackle color now though. I have one blue one too that is just to die for, unfortunately I think it's a boy!

maybe if I can get them to hold still long enough I'll send you a couple pics and you can confirm the bad news.

Thanks for posting your girl!

Now get out from under 'neath that chair!

I think this pullet may give you a good start with her offspring if you use a dark rooster over her, a dark rooster may help balance out some of the red/shafting in the chest and you may get some nice colored offspring that way, if that is what your goals are. You can breed away from most things that you find undesirable in your birds by not breeding birds that you don't like, breed the birds that make YOU go WOW!!!!! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and truly depends on your goals.

Now, why I think that and considering that she is still maturing.....................

IMO:

-I think she has a good comb

-I like the width of her chest

-I like how she carries her wing

-She has nice copper color in the hackle

-She has a nice eye color

-She has nicely feathered shanks

-I like her type, she holds herself proud (I really like that.......it's like they know they are pretty and they are going to strut their stuff)

-Basically, she is a nice bird overall type wise IMO.

The only thing, IMO, that some may consider and I don't like using this word but it is best describes what is a fault??? (Please correct me anyone if I am wrong with the fault thing...

)...... may be what is referred to as "shafting" and/or "overly red" in her breast.

( Question?????...for those who know[/b ], Am I correct in thinking that the "shafting" or "overly red" are one in the same and are believed to be indicitive (sp?) of the wheaten gene....and that's the ER-Wh.... right? Help me......some many facts to retain and even though I think I understand many there are still many things that elude me and that I just don't plain get even though I have read it again and again.)

I'm learning right along with you and everyone else here. So, if I have confused the terms here or used them incorrectly, I apologize in advance and will hope that those who know will come along to give the correct definition.

Dang phone company doing repairs and cut me off. Had to catch up here, it's really moving today!

A turned blade signals pene.... ????? Never heard that one... a side sprig... This is a fault in all breeds. I don't think we can signal out one contributor of a single particular factor as a culprit only.

Would one assertain that the side sprig say on a seabright means that it's heritage contains pene as well? or that a lopped over comb in the leghorn means that there is pene there??? (I am underlining my point here)

Penedesenca leaves many markers.. Marans are comprised of many breeds... Let's look at the bird's heritage and what it is said to be it's makeup... I think you can find examples of all of the faults in the breeds that make up this "breed"... Just saying...

The French allow the hens to have a laid over comb at the back.... It signifies the end of the lay cycle.. I do note that the angle of my Roosters comb changes also...

Just my 2 cents

Ok, silly question maybe, but I need some thoughts here. Was just out with the whole flock of 10

. Two of the young chicklets as I refer to them, are looking very promising (cockerels). They are 5 1/2 weeks old, but their legs are honking huge! Tree trunks, look like the same thickness as the 15 1/2 old roo's legs. Does this early development of leg size have any bearing on how big they will be as adults?? Is it similar to a puppy with big paws growing "into" them?

First I want to make it clear that this is just me joking around........................LOL My birds are said to be Jeane Wade/Presley/Bev Davis..............I guess I am really raising Mutts.....LOL. I am learning a lot in my confusion & will continue to try to improve what I have.
