First I want to make it clear that this is just me joking around........................LOL My birds are said to be Jeane Wade/Presley/Bev Davis..............I guess I am really raising Mutts.....LOL. I am learning a lot in my confusion & will continue to try to improve what I have.

I know of a bantam white Rock that won best of show in a large show and it had no Rock blood in it. It looked like a Rock though. It was a white Orp/Wyandotte bantam cross.

Walt

What?!?!? It won just because it looked like the Rock!
So, if a person that has a bird that resembles a bird of a completely different breed and has absolutely no blood of the breed that it was entered under it can win? How does that work?
Isn't that kind of like misrepresentation?

Sorry! I just don't understand.

These two breeds are similiar to a rock and could easily be done. The Marans people do the same thing by crossing them with everything that comes along trying to make a new color. No DNA tests are done.

Karen, that's what lots of us are doing. There seems to be two schools of thought on breeding; one is to line breen the same line over & over again...there is lots of good to be seen in this, but I have personally found hatchability to suffer on each generation. The other school of thought picks & chooses the best of the best, and breeds them, regardless of line. In the end, doing this, you do not have a mutt - you have the best of the best of that breed! Both schools have merits; you need to do what makes the most sense for YOU!

yep, i have two of your OE's like that wynette and they are just adorable! the one I actually thought I messed up somewhere b/c it looked just like my black Amer but finally started getting some hackle color now though. I have one blue one too that is just to die for, unfortunately I think it's a boy!

maybe if I can get them to hold still long enough I'll send you a couple pics and you can confirm the bad news.

Well you got all three strains included, no way you could be wrong when telling someone what you are breeding. With the amount of culls I am getting lately I do not believe any of the big breeders would claim involement.

I still can't help but to think that it is not right in some way, but far be it from me to judge what another does with their birds or what they call them.

Snowbird: Would you please post the faults in a pictorial? In the past you stated that you had made a site with the faults in pictures... We would love to have examples of:

Pinched tail
shafting
mossy
squirrel tail
etc.

It would be a great resource for newbies and we could refer to it.

We keep revisiting the same topics and It would be nice to "see" what we are talking about in one post/page.

Hi Don!

What has been your experience with the other lines out there with the back of the comb turning sideways in full lay? Is this something in your opinion that is just a characteristic of Jeane birds?

I have 2 blue pullets and a splash that are doing that right now.

Thanks

Kim

A big percentage of the Jeane Marans female that I have seen the just the back of the comb will turn sideways does not have to be in laying mode. To me this signals that they have Pene Blood mixed into them. I have culled several of these from my flock. If you breed these you will get some Carnation combs, again signaling Pene Blood. I have no idea who put the Pene blood in but it is there anyway.

I am not talking about the entire comb turning or lopping, just the blade part.
