I think if it takes 7 generations to breed those faults out - - -
then some of the big name breeders should be real close to the perfect bird by now

My question is.... is that 7 years per fault.. so if your bird has 5 faults,, OUCH!!!!!

pusskatkins~

Either they were very light Marans eggs or very dark Orp eggs?? Do the chicks have traits that would say Orp to you?? Leg color? Shank feathering? Pics would help a bunch as folks have stated. Oh, and just a tip...just because someone belongs to a "club", does not necessarily make them automatically "reputable"! Been there, done that, wore the T-shirt out!

Lisa, When I projected 5 years to get close to where I wanted to be, I think now, that may have been too optimistic!

That said, in the working process, I am going to have fun with it and ENJOY MY BIRDS!!

I plan on having fun with it. I am definitely not in it for the money. . . . I just want to see how good I can get them. It is kinda like a craft project to me. . . . OR a science experiment to my husband.

I would love to win a ribbon one day just to say "Blah Blah Blah

When I try to explain chicks in the house, in a brooder cage, they all think I've taken the plunge off the very deep end! I suspect they are envisioning free range house chickens!

In fact, I KNOW that's what they are thinking. When telling the guy in the package store about my babies, he asked me, "Does your daughter know you have chickens in your house???!!" Yup, so that does not count as nursing home material...yet!

Well, my dad is probably not long from a nursing home

, but part of his socilaizing with me is spending time outside with the chickens everyday. He helps me escourt them to the free range area and helps me water and feed them. Then he stands with me as we watch them interact with the pot belly pigs. I am not sure who is funnier to watch - - the pigs trying to steal the chicken food OR the chickens trying to steal the pigs food. . . . .

All I can say for sure is - -- - it is a good thing the pigs can not fly and that the chickens are small and quick !

Lisa, Sorry to hear that about your Dad. I know with me, my animals keep me going, regardless of how I feel physically. Been through a really tough spell myself, and they were the only thing that got me out of bed some days. I can now take the time to just sit back and watch them for as long as I want. I had put a triangular piece of plywood next to the outdoor waterer for some shade for the chicklets in their pen today. They must've thought it was London Bridge, and ran round and round under it. When I put them back inside and let the big chooks have access to that area, they all lined up like kids going on a slide. Except they would climb up to the top and jump off!

It was so much fun to watch them interact with some new stimulus in their run. Keep Dad interacting with the animals, it does help in so many ways, like blood pressure for one, and just sheer joy in watching them.

This is completely nuts.. A gazillion pages in one day........................Intense but educational conversation....Me brain is on overload...Thanks

If you have them freeze them up in portion size bags... Real fish does not contain the preservatives found in fish meal...
