Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

And thanks to everything I've read and learned on these Marans Threads, I was able to identify him and pull him out so he can't keep spreading bad rumors.......

Funny thing is - I had already gone the long way around to figure out who the culprit was. I had divided all roos into different pens and marked the eggs and kept seprating and hatching till I narrowed it down to his pen being the one that random yellow chicks hatched from. I had already pulled him when people started posting info on what Wheatens look like (I had no idea) and I went out to look at him and sure enough - he met all criteria. It was kind of sad at first when I pulled him from the breeder pens and the flock he'd been with all his life - he slept outside their pen, on the ground every night and when I went outside he would run up to me and stop and just stand there as if saying "help", "put me back", "I'm lost and don't know what to do". Now he's happily running around the farm and takes his picks of free ranging girls of all breeds.

On the other hand, I did have a breeder here recently that raises Wheatens and she said he wasn't pure Wheaten - most likely a mix.

Ruth,

What made her say that? Was it the mossiness on his belly fluff?

Debbi... are you referring to my comments??? (I will clarify).. What is the question exactly?

Thanks - - - my pics only show colored leg feathering. So, I would of been heartbroken if mine had hatched with white leg feathering.

I am going to have to do a real good job on documentation this time around. The first time around, we weren't looking a marans as a serious option - - just a novelty. Then, we feel in love with their personality AND a whole new game began !

I think she mentioned because it wasn't a full/complete brown wing triangle. If you spread his wing, only the lower feathers are colored, not all of that section. She named a few other things but it sounded like Charlie Brown's teacher to me.

She raises "top" Wheatens so I took her to know what she was talking about. Plus, I posted a picture of him on this thread some time back and several people posted he wasn't pure Wheaten.

Like anything else Ruth... Ya work with what ya got... Work em if you like... They are yours and you have a male and a female in your yard... You can breed and cull and improve your Bethel line of Wheatons... Those would be your yardbirds!!!

I believe you could improve your cinnamon triangle in future generations...

Oh, I do intend to breed them and see what they produce. I just needed to get him out of the BCM pen. I might even use him in my Olive Egger pens.

Ruth: Hmmm... that may produce and interesting result.... I can't even imagine what they would be.... (post pix when you do this)...

I am glad to hear that you will embark on this journey... It will challenge you and likely produce something TRADEMARK.

Geebs, No, I was referring to what the Wheaton breeder had said to Ruth.
