Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hens and Roos

The Marans go by a color chart, available from the Marans clubs. The chart depicts the colors 1 - 9, one being the lightest color (white like a Leghorn), and nine being the darkest brown (Marans). The Marans breed is not considered a Marans unless it can lay at LEAST a number four egg. So, to even qualify within the breed, the eggs must be at least a 4, preferably darker, ideal/perfect being a 9. Your egg there looks to be a 4, maybe. Hatchery Cuckoos tend not to be as dark as they can be from a breeder who has worked to get the egg color darker. Black Copper Marans tend to lay the darkest eggs.

Quick question. If a chick hatches out of a light or dark egg does that mean they will lay or carry that color of an gene. Say if a hen hatches from a 6/7 egg will she lay that dark.

No it doesn't always work that way since the male also has something to do with the offspring egg color. It is always better to only use the darkest eggs. Also when mixing different lines it will lighten up the eggs some. In my Marans they will have to lay a six or better to be keepers and will not set an egg lower than a six.

Math Ace, At this point in the game don't worry about the Comb as sometimes it will take care of itself. I believe that Bev, said her Marans had large combs because of the hot Florida summers.
