Snowbird there is many references on the website... The M.C.F. Made the rules regarding the chickens that lay the dark russet egg... (the definition of marans of France) according to the write up in the M.C.F. portion of the site...Look under 1946. It is a long read but I think if you spent some time perusing the site and the sister sites adopted after that time that it would become clear. Bev had a link until the French site was updated...now it defaults. perhaps a new link from her site is in order as it was readily available information at one time. Here is a little clip off of another portion of the french site. Under footnote:

regard to the mission of the Marans-Club de France: it is much more significant today to preserve, seriously and rigorously, the many current varieties and those which are genetically and directly derived from it, likely from homologation (for example, Silvered Black [Birchen], Blue-copper or Silvered-Blue [Blue Birchen], which derives from Black-copper [Brown-Red], rather than to create new ones.
FOOT-NOTE: Even if of ideal type and plumage colour, stock which has lost the characteristic of laying extra-russet-red eggs (as defined by the MCF) will never again be true Marans.
The booklet on the genetics of some crossings of plumage varieties is available near the head office of the MCF for the price of 7 euros (French language).

In fact a marans bred from good stock and lays a substandard egg is considered a "Phenotype" marans not a True marans.

Theoretically speaking....yes they should get the DNA that would enable them to perhaps lay a darker egg........but DNA changes its behaviors and how it works with each new life form. There still is no guarantee that their offspring will lay a darker egg, but the chances are better than not.

As long as people are not trying to pass off eggs that are not acceptable (ie....less than a 4) I don't see the harm in people setting what they get in hopes that they may achieve better results the next time around. Heck.....it doesn't even bother me a bit if someone only wants birds that will lay only a 4 and no darker and if that is what they want to breed for........more power to them, as it is up to the particular individuals personal choice and as long as they that 4 or better.....it's still a Marans.
