Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

my timers stay on till 11pm don't come on in the morning that's how they are set for the horses so by default the chickens are on them too as a note my Marans are night owls they stay out in the pen for quite a bit before they go to roost they enjoy the extra light my Delawares don't care that I have them on they go to bed at 4pm I find chicken behavior very interesting.....

Jeremy, I'm quite pleased with the black coppers I got from Beth & Dave Fitzgerald of Fitz Farms. They have good size, though the pullets tended to be either quite black (not enough coppering in the hackles) or the opposite - mossy. ALL lay a nice, dark egg. And, Beth & Dave are just awesome to work with.

VillageChicken - welcome to the Marans thread! Glad to see you here! As far as feathering, I find that different lines feather in more quickly/slowly. I know that with the Heritage breeds (which Marans are not) they prefer the slower feathering, but I'm unsure what it means with Marans. There IS a "slow feathering gene" that is a genetic issue, but it's extreme. Like......4 week olds just beginning to get their primaries. I dobt that's what you have (?) going on, though, as I don't think it's very common.

Do you know anything specifically about their Wheaten Marans, Wynette?

VErrrrry Interesting!

My marans are in bed early. They head to roost around 7:00. . .
I've got no early birds. .. they are all early risers. I think my roo crows in his SLEEP.
He crows way before dawn and is still in the coop!

Wynette, Look at the Brown under the vent and at top of the leg, this is why I culled all the 176 early December Marans I hatched this year. I do not have any Brown soft feathers in my flock and the few males I have left from other matings look like your male. I only kept 7 young males and 3 old males and none of them are worth a plug nickel.

I am looking to purchase some hatching eggs if anybody knows where I can get some. I am specifically looking for solid blues (no copper) with feathered shanks and good egg color, and cuckoos with feathered shanks and good egg color. Good type would be nice too! If you know who may have either of these I would appreciate the help! Thanks!

I wish you luck as I do not believe what you are looking for exists in the USA, I would settle for the same in Black Copper. Don

I hope I'm still on your list for eggs when you think you've got yours ready to ship.....when it comes to Marans it must be the one in twenty rule...

Chasehope I have some nice silvers after I test hatch I should be able to ship in January. Now Bev said mine look like they have wheaton in them but you have goldens like me so that wouldn't be a bad thing....
