Hey, I've got an over-coppered cockerel I'm still keeping because my girls, too, seriously need a boost in the coppering department.

He also has really nice feathering on his shanks (something I need more of in my flock)

I think he is a very good looking boy

He seems to have real nice size for his age. What "line" are your birds from? I am still in the process of trying to determine if the coppery breast is going to be benificial for the offspring or not. Just need these girls to start laying again

WOW REBEL

Lots of follow-up needed to your post . .. . .

FIRST - - THANKS for the congratulations and I am very excited. I have done it all now - -bought from the feed store, bought from individuals, brought from a "Breeder", hatched with a broody, and finally hatched with the homemade incubator.

HATCH RATE - - I crushed my eggs after I cleaned out the incubator and I had 9 duds. NINE eggs with no chick developement. So excluding those from the hatch rate . . . I had a 75% hatch rate resulting in 19 hatched chicks. NOT BAD for a newbie ! !

9 / 13 being pullets - - LUCKY YOU ! ! I need to have you buy my next set of lottery tickets.

I will be ok with cockerels because I am hoping to improve on my chunky monkey roo.

I haven't heard any feedback from the note takers here as to what to be looking for. . . Maybe it too early to do anything.

Pictures - - -I posted them back on post #5635 and #5634, if you want to go back and look. If not, I will post new ones in another week or two. My one chick is so blue that I can not wait to see what happens with it. The last time we had a chick that looked so different from the others . . . .Well it turned out to be a roo. I'd be ok with a blue copper marans roo. I'm getting all giddy just looking at Illia's roo.

Morning Everyone!!!!!!!

As of yesterday morning my hen was up walking around and eating, but no egg and she was looking like she felt better by the ton and not all hunched up anymore. I got home so late last night from work I went straight to bed and haven't checked since, will be going out first thing when it is light out.

I have used several different things for bedding for the chicks after they come out of the hatcher and I always end up going back to the shavings. I have not had a problem with the chicks eating the shavings. I can't help thinking about what mamma would be rearing them up on in nature if we weren't artifically doing it for them and somehow they manage to do just fine with mamma. I had a hen that went MIA for a little over 3 weeks, I thought she was a goner until one day she came waddling out of the woods with 10 little chickies in toe. I can only imagine where she brooded and what the chicks hatched on.

What do you use ? ??

These guys seem to be eating food only. . . .

I use Neomycin treated absorbant board from Cutler's supply. will send you a pm and explain how I do my chicks. Don

Don,
Please share with all of us. I want to know too.................. I used to use rice hulls but that is propably bad too. I have been using layers of newspaper & just rolling it up to dispose of it. I haven't had anyone die or that had sticky butt, but I am a low volumne hatcher...LOL

Walt~

I know you are line right now as I type so I have a question.

Blue- I know it is premature but here goes.

Since blue expresses in many different shades is there going to be one specifc shade of blue that is sought after or desired for the purposed standards, or is any shade of blue going to be acceptable per specific variety?

Thank you!

Pink~ I'm quite sure that Gnarles is an unacceptable shade of blue, so you can just pack his bags and send him to Missouri where no one will care!
