Haha. I painted one of the coops yellow and the black/split lav orpingtons kept trying to 'help' me. This was in July...well a few of them still have yellow stripes!

Throw him in a pen with a bunch of pullets where he is the only roo. I bet he starts to crowing. I had a retarded Light Sussex. He came out of the shell screeching instead of cheeping and he was born with a bald butt. He did manage to grow up and mature, except his tail feathers were curly on one side and straight on the other and he walked with his head cocked to the side, and by looks was most definately a roo but was in a pen with a dominant roo. He never crowed or tried to breed. I just thought it was because he was reatarded. I had someone come over to pick up some other hens and she saw Fred and fell in love. I told her he was retarded and he didn't crow or breed. She wanted him anyway because he reminded her of a retarded rat she used to have and she didn't want a crower or a breeder so that would be perfect. So, I gave her Fred. The very day he was at his new home he bred everything in sight and started crowing. She did keep him and he has since calmed down a bit but it is so true about the less dominant roo not crowing or even developing as quickly as the dominant one.
Oh Maann, I posted this to not only show the submission to the alpha roo but thought this was a funny chicken story. Maybe the wrong thread for it since this is a serious thread. Probabably try the Chicken story thread. Maybe get some laughs.

John took pics today of his blue copper maran roo that we kept from our May PA ChickenStock hatch. We hatched 11 out of 19 eggs and only had 4 pullets. They haven't begun to lay yet. After much discussion, we decided to keep the nicer of the blue roos and dispense with the rest of the roos. They met their demise this week and we'll find out how tasty they are soon
Our three hens are 1 blue with some copper, one black with some copper and one black with little copper. ( We lost the other pullet to an attack
)
The hatching eggs were combined from CottageGarden and AHappyChick.

Seriously, I like him and I like the color of his hackles, wing bow and back. I like his tail set even though it may look a little higher, he will also bulk up a little more too. I think you have a nice roo that you should do some test mating with. I would use him over that blue pullet!

....I think he is beautiful. I'm the type of person that would cross him with one of my culled Blue Copper Marans or a blue bird that I have just to see if I could get more pretty blues that lay a dark or darker egg that I could add to the laying flock just for pretty eggs.

Not sure if anyone answered this further about Birchen and Blue/Splash.
Birchen Marans if they are pure, carry two silver genes (instead of two gold like BCM) and do not carry any mahogany genes like BCM. Otherwise they are genetically the same. You say your Blue Birchen carries gold, so he has gold showing through his silver (one gold and one silver gene). If you pair him with your blue and splash, if they are pure, then it would work as Pink said with the BCM. You could possibly get a pure Blue Birchen with two silver genes (no gold) after mating some of his hen offspring back to him.
The tricky thing is that hens only carry either one silver or one gold gene. Once you hatch your first generation, you might not know which is which, since the Blue/Splash genetics of your existing hens is stronger than the rooster's Birchen genetics. Any hens that hatch will have their birchen genes hiding, so they may not reveal if they are gold or silver. They cannot be both.
It's possible any hens hatched might show traces of gold like your rooster. But any of the hens you use in the second generation bred back to your Birchen rooster should not show any gold - if they do, they won't likely produce many pure Blue Birchens for you, and definitely not any roosters. So about half your hens from the first generation will be silver. If you know which ones these are, and you mate them back to your Blue Birchen rooster, 1/4th of this second generation could still be impure Birchen and have their Birchen genes hidden in the Black/Blue/Splash.
The remaining 3/4 of this second generation will be pure Birchen, about half of them will be roosters and if you chose the right hens with silver and not gold, they should all be pure Silver Birchen. If these hens you chose for this second breeding were blue and not splash, then half of these pure Silver Birchen roosters will be Blue, the other half will be splash or black. In real numbers, with average odds in this second generation, out of a hatch of 16, 12 could be pure Birchen. Yesterday as I was playing with the babies I noticed that out of the Marans that I hatched all but one are boys.
The 2 lightest blues are very light blue, I would post a photo of them but they are so light that every photo taken makes them look like a splash. The little splash that is Bill's son is huge, he towers over everyone else but some of the Delaware boys hatched the same day are giving him a run for his money in the size dept.
