Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I think it is a great idea... I think I am going to jump on the wagon and test as well... What is the quickest maturing hen? would that be the barred rocks?? I accidently crossed a wyandotte with a marans and got a darker laying wyandotte....(little hussy)

geebs, I just started up another thread asking for Genetic experts comments on the Brown Red and Black Copper color patterns. Lets see what the experts say or do not say. I do not pretend to be a Marans experts. I will not comment on the BC males you have showed as I don't have time right at this minute to be involved in a agrument about my opinion. Everyone have a nice day. Don

Here's a pic that shows me what it should look like. It's off the French Marans site. Also, look on the home page and see the roo on the left with the hen. Too bad it's not a bigger pic without that chubby hen in the way of him!

Don: You give everyone else opinions on birds... Why won't you give one on this one??? Do you think it is so far out of whack that you are going to hurt my feelings.... Really you won't. I value your opinion..I hope when you get time you can get back to it...

Jan~
I like using the Barred Rocks because they were sexlinks and I got some pretty blue

birds out of the deal. I didn't much care for the Buff x Marans......

birds though they did not struggle as much with egg laying as the barred crossed birds did. The Marans egg is so large that the Barred crossed birds did not lay very often and every egg came out huge and stress fractures around the equatorial band...every egg, but they were pretty eggs.

Geebs, with the American standard the shoulder should be Mahogany. Don

Nobody asked (up to that point) for the bird to be judged or about the American Standard, which is a work of fiction.

Thanks Debbi.... He looks copper across the back and that Darth Egger is what I was trying to tell you... I hope after all this banter you haven't lost the question!! LOL That is another fine example of copper balancing... (that's what I lovingly call it).. Like walking a tightrope between black and red.... charcoal and mahogany... whichever semantics fit you..

Yes, that was a big help. Thank you. I'm sorry that your bird drew unnwarranted and unsolicited criticism.

I didn't recall anybody asking whether it conformed to the *nonexistant* APA standard.
