Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

My one and only female BCM has started to lay eggs (bottom right of course)! The eggs from her are so dark and big! When my other chickens started to lay, they were small eggs, but these are so large! Now, I'm awaiting the eggs from the black and blue marans! I can't figure out who is laying the darker speckled one in the upper middle...it's either a golden comet, australorp, light brahma or buff orpington.

Just a sad update. . . . My SECOND attempt to hatch some Blue Wheaten Marans eggs has failed. I don't know how the fertility was, never got a chance to candle them, but a winterstorm, followed by a 10 hour poweroutage in the middle of the 23 degree night caused, well, a failure in the incubation.

The temp read 55 degrees, and for 10 hours. . . There's no way they're still alive. So, I just lost about 15 more W/BW Marans eggs.

I noticed the new avatar yesterday and thought 0o0o chocolate mints! Its very pretty

New Hen: Pretty BCM eggie congrats! The one in the top middle: It doesn't look like my golden comet (although she lays a very dark egg, prob a 5 on the marans scale LOL..but solid no speckles), light brahma or buff or blk/split lav orps. So it must be either the australop or another bcm?

ETA: edited for spelling because my keyboard is dyslexic today. Bad keyboard bad lol.

pink, that's what I suspect also. I don't have any astralops or know anything about them lol so I couldn't say about that. Do they lay a blue egg or brown?
