They lay a nice creamy off white light beige egg. Here is my 3 year old Black Australorp's gigantor egg from a couple days ago. I think she was confused that day and thought she was a goose or something.

The 2 Marans eggs were from yesterday, the one on the bottom came from my 6 mos. old Blue Copper and the one on the top is from a 10 mos. old Blue Copper.

OmG that had to hurt lol. See told ya I didn't know nuttin bout them australops lol. Pretty Marans eggs too.

Debbi you are having some crazy weather. Stay warm and safe!!

Nice eggs all that have posted them in last 3 days. My young BC Marans started laying recently. 2 hens are laying and they seem to be gradually getting a little darker. I photographed them both with and without a flash. How do most of you post. I did see that Debbi said her picture was without a flash. I will post mine without the flash also. ( although the flash makes the eggs look much darker)

Anyways I am thrilled my young ones have started to lay.

On the leghorn cuckoo cross, is it possible to get a darker egg from the cuckoo and also get somewhat the frequency of laying from the leghorn? Getting a darker egg but more often would be nice. Not the really dark but maybe it will be a nice brown. I crossed a hatchery cuckoo hen with a BCM roo and the resulting hens lay darker eggs than my BCM hens. Go figure! Hmmm, a BCM with a leghorn might be worth a try. I also crossed a Barnevelder roo with a Wheaton cropout from BCM that layed the same dark egg for her entire laying cycle and the resulting hens lay gorgeous eggs. Hens themselves were gorgeous too.

ON

I see the egg avatar!

One of my BCM keeps flying out of the free range area.

This morning I planted some seedlings in the garden area right outside of the free range area. 3 hours later - - - the Crazy BCM had flown out and ate my freshly planted seedlings.

Cleary, I am going to need to clip her wings.

Do you folks clip one wing or both wings ? ?

Do you have a problem with your marans flying ? ?

My easter eggers, speckled sussex, and wyandotte never try to go over the fence.

Yep... Some of em have a REAL DESIRE to freerange... It is best to sate the desire with some tractor time...and some up above things time... They are happier that way.. I have had a couple... I didnt worry too much about them because if they weren't happy they weren't laying good.... Just put up with them being renegades... Wing clipping didnt' help... You may end up rehoming if you can't keep her in... She will teach the others... especially if she finds a good nesting spot.... Sometimes they are soooo private that they don't want to be around the other girls... Green acres comes to mind... "farm life is the place for me".. you may have a park avenue hen in a greenacres coop... Good luck... Poultry netting was the most successful.

Those of you not seeing new avatars can do a Disk Cleanup to get rid of temp files and cookies,
that should fix it.

Pinkchick's pink chick is back !!

Lisa, you have a naughty girl to make lunch out of your seedlings.

The only bird I have that can fly over the fence is a young Welsummer pullet.
Once she flew to the top of the coop, and for the longest time; was afraid to come down.
I thought I was going to have to call the fire department to get her down

My BCM is only a month older than my blue and black marans. I ordered BCM eggs from Greenfire farms and only ended up with one female. A month later, I hatched a set of blue and black and splash marans eggs from Peachick and ONLY got female marans. I love those dark eggs! I'm thinking about rehoming some of my other chickens so I can keep more of the marans we have.
