Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Morning!

I think next year I'm headed to ON's house, do an eat and run, then head straight for Math's house for eats too. YUMMY!!!!!!! My family can do with out me for one year, though it means they will have to do the cooking. I'll even let 'em use my house, but they have to clean up and they better be gone when I get back home.

Fat chance...I'm dreaming and I know it.

Make sure they feed your animals too while they are there!

I'll try to get pics if the Barnie Marans crosses but not sure I will be able to show their lacing on the chest. It's 2 shades of red/Wheaton. Nice big hens and they lay a nice big egg and yellow clean legged. Definate improvement on the Barnie (not color though). By useing the Barnie roo instead of the BCM over Barnie hens I though I wouldn't get the egg color since the BCM roo is supposed to carry the dark egg gene but that Wheaton Sport hen must be carrying something. I ended up useing some BCM hens with a Barnie roo too. They just look like a BCM and have feathered legs but still Juveniles. Hmm, what to do next? Might try the BCM roo over Barnie hens. BYW, this is not a serious project. Mostly just messing around. Kind of fun to see the egg color.

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!

Well I am pretty upset. It looks like none of my Marans will be good enough for breeding. I was hoping one of my roos would be usable, but everyday I am seeing more white in his tail.

I have five pullets that are supposed be from Bev Davis lines. They are pretty birds at three months. Three of the pullets have yellow in their legs. Would I be able to use the two with correct color legs? They all have the same father. Would it be better to just start over?

I will be getting some hatching eggs from some of you on this thread hopefully. I see how this can be a frustrating breed. I guess I will have better luck next year.

Clams were excellent last night, I just did not buy enough. Next time, I am getting 9 dozen clams instead of 4. My children have discovered that they like steamed clams dipped in melted butter

IT is so funny with the weather around here. Two years ago, Burr it was freezing. This year 80 F. It is no wonder my garden can't figure out what season it should be growing vegetables for !

I am going to pass on the hatch along. I just can not do all that again until AFTER the holidays.
I am going to decorate my house to the hilt this year.

Good morning all it's 28 at my house got down to 18 brrrr for us coastal people. Debbie my husband put that house together in about 30mins after an hour of looking at it out of the box I had to hear about spending $ for something like that (it was my birthday present to myself anyways)...getting a piece of plywood for the floor and going to try and raise the roosts and my sweetie says he can design a bigger one made from plywood now that he understands what I want....him figuring that out was worth more than the cost of that playhouse!

I candled my nice Cuckoo eggs and one didn't develop so I have 7 good ones I don't think any of the first batch of my turkeys are good but I put 2 that are maybes in lock down. Hopefully today I can start separating the birds that need test mating and get a trio maybe a quad in the little house. I've sold some other birds and that frees up another pen for my Goldens who are just starting to lay then I just need some more little love shacks for my breeding projects.....

Hope everyone had a great Thansgiving

I am sorry for your disappointment. I know how you feel. I am always wishing I had better but will just have to get by for now til that happens. There are alot of people on this board that are willing to help out so maybe someone will give you a shout. Good luck

Ha! Glad you said that about hubby building one out of plywood. I had thought about taking this one apart come spring, and using it as a pattern to build a bigger one too! It incredibly withstood the winds we had here the other night, and so far, hasn't leaked any water in. The roosts they put in there are useless where they are. I left two in, the highest ones, but seems the chicklets all cram into the nest box at night!

In a couple more weeks, they'll all be together in the big coop, so I can store the "paper towel coop" in the garage till next year.

I bought these for the egg color. I want your honest opinion on how they would do in a show. Don't worry about my feelings. They are really not pets nor did I buy them for show quality. I want to really know how close to the standard they are. Maybe someday when I am bored I might go for the standard.

Well, as usual, you've got a nicely colored cockerel and purely black (no coppering at all) pullets. Don't worry about that though. I honestly think Black Coppers are just the kind that need to be double mated.

Otherwise, they're pretty young to judge. Pretty nice combs coming in, good tail and body so far. . . Otherwise they're still young, but nice.
