Debbi,

They are 6-months old. The roo has been all over my older chickens for months. But just this week I caught him on one of my BCM hens that is the same age as he is. I'll wait a week before I go searching the neighbors garage.

thanks!

its starting to get cold here to, in the 30,s ..... a few years back when we started the first of our wheaten marans it toook 10 months to get the first egg i started running a light in the coop for 2 hours in the evening and i up the Protein level ,,but its been almost 2 months since we got a egg from wheaten they all starting molting process about 2 months ago and feathers are almost completely in soo I hope to have some eggs soon !

All the time needed to go frombought egg to laying an egg I don’t know how people have so many generations of birds ,,,I started about 2 years ago and I only have the parent stock of pure davis , and Presley and i have a first generation of cross birds and its almost 2 years later and cant wait to start the next around xmass is when they start back to heavy laying for us Protein level ,,but its been almost 2 months since we got a egg from wheaten they all starting molting process about 2 months ago and feathers are almost completely in soo I hope to have some eggs soon !

Don't lose hope with them. We work with what we have, I too think that I saw something that I am not very happy about on my Gnarles boy yesterday while I was escaping the masses in my house, yep......the dreaded white feather in the tail. I almost cried. He is a year and a half old and I thought for sure I was home free.....no way could a white feather pop up now I told myself, so I went in for a closer inspection and sure enough a small amount of white is showing. After I picked my jaw up off the ground and headed back to my very full house, I reminded myself that it could be worse and that these birds ARE project birds. I took a moment and recalled some of the first Marans that I had, talk about a bad joke, after reflecting on the first ones for just a second and ending up in a hearty laugh, I turned and took another good look at what I think is still one of the best Marans roosters I have ever had, I am happy with him even with his faults and I will continue to work with him.
No use tearing down the barn if the structure is still good and all it needs is a maybe a loose board or two fixed and a new coat of paint.

Hope the holiday was as wonderful for you as it was for me.. Have to go outside yet and check on birdies... Such a worry leaving em... but it would be crazy to take em...... wouldn't it????

Thanks!

Holiday was great! Tiring, but great fun!

Gnarles is useful as a breeder regardless.... He is too pretty to waste... What is show and what is used for breeding are not the same thing... No worries about him, friend. I too am chilling after the throngs of ppl... I just want a dark room and a puzzle...LOL.

Thanks Chooks!

I am not discouraged now.....I was for about 30 seconds, until the images of the first Marans I ever had flashed back across my minds eye. Like I said......no use tearing down a perfectly good barn if the bones are good and it only needs a little paint.

No worries Jan, I will still use him. A white feather is not going to hold me back. I think OntheSpot asked once not too long ago, who would rather work with a white feather and good tail set vs something else I can't remember, well anywho I stated that I would rather work with a nice tail set and a white feather.........so be it then, thats what it is.

...or, you could fill Gnarles' backpack and point him towards MO, specifically, MY HOUSE!
