I understand. Just going by the genetic list on the calculator, all the laced and pencilled are either e+ wild type based or the others like barnavelders are eb based which are supposed to have dark brown hatch down.

I had some mixed breed chicks with that same pattern (kind of wheaten/wild type mix) and they both feathered out buff. How did your chick feather out?

Yes!, those BLRW's are eb based, there's the dark brown chick down. I thought THAT was what people called partridge.

I think partridge can be a term that is used loosely with some breeds. Partridge Rocks are also born dark brown.

Well doesn't that muddy the water... Here I though I had a new presentation and it is the same presentation...just darker... Okay... thanks Villagechicken....Much appreciated...I have been searching the net and coming up with the same answer... I thought it had to do with the double lacing versus wildtype... who knows... AAARRRGGG

I can't remember... They didn't stick around... I offed them and the rooster producing it.

Chick down doesn't always determine the final feathering. This new chick is definitely e+ wildtype. Your other one could have been wildtype / wheaten?
Yes it is confusing. Usually lacing and pencilling are a combination of genes, the eb allele being part of the mix on some breeds.

I still don't know what people mean exactly when they talk about "partridge".

Here in Hungary it is used for both Brown Leghorn Wildtype, and the Double Laced "dark" Brahmas. Equally confusing.

I got it....Clear as Mud!! ha ha ha... I give up... It is a different partrige phenotype and likely different genotype as well and is called partidge...OKay makes sense

Last spring I hatched out of purchased eggs that were supposed to be "partridge" araucanas. Out of the 4 that hatched, 3 had identical hatch down - just like your new sport.
They all 3 feathered out completely differently. One was red columbian (RIRish), one buff incomplete columbian, and one real "partridge" wildtype with extra melanizers. They were identical at hatch.

The odd chick with wheaten down feathered out to look like the red columbian minus some mahogany. Even the chick down is like a box of chocolates. You think you know what you're gonna get, but you still don't know!

Anyway, I didn't think I was raining on your parade, I was just curious about the prior sport. I still think this chick will be of great interest to a great many. One BYCer's trash is another BYCer's treasure!

It's my understanding that in Marans partridge and duckwing are the same. Did I get confused again? I know I probably came in on the middle of the conversation without reading back to the original post to see the actual question. Just smack me now.

Debbi~ Congrats! I like Roy's feathered shanks.......he looks to have just the right amount.

BLaBauve~ There are some Birchen Photos floating around this thread somewhere but I was just over on feathersite.com and they have some good photos of some lovely Birchens. Hope this helps.

Ha ha... Villagechicken... No rain on my parade... not at all...the more points ppl bring up the more I can stretch my understanding... The horizons are long here.. Thanks...I hadn't thought about the melanisers at work here but ya know that is a good point... This would likely be a lack of melaniser... hmmm cool.... I often times wondered about it as they are adults and you see some double lacing show up in hens that the melanisers are practically non existant... That would possibly be the same thing in a tiny offspring.... I love to take my brain out and play with it... thanks Villagechicken
