Debbi,
Small world! My wife is from Onsted! I've been to Adrian many times. I'm originally from balmy SoCal. Winter here in Hungary is similar to MI winters. Not as miserable as UP or Wisconsin blizzard territory though. My 6 and a half month old Marans are still not laying. Probably won't til March! We're on the east side of the time zone (MI's on the far west, so jealous!) so our days are really short in the winter, dark at 4pm! Shortest day is just a week away.
Wynette- at least you get those really nice looong summer days that stay light til nearly 10pm!

True! I do love spring, summer, and fall here in Michigan. It's not very humid (usually) and the fall colors...well...just gorgeous!
geebsie - I do have a few eggies in my bator...sort of a last-minute, tester egg kinda thing....my granddaughter's coming in from out of town, will be here 12/27 - 12/30, and she was really wanting to see some chicks hatch, so.....here I go again! Nope, mine are too early for Mahonri's thread.
They should be hatching on 12/29. I SO am not looking forward to raising up chicks in the winter. Seems like I tell myself every fall I'm not going to do it....but....here I go again....
Uh... hate to point this out.. but if they hatch late like mine do... you are really close to the first.... HELLOOOO ... you still should hit Monhri's... (spelling???) thread... because they may not all be out yet...Especially if you are hatching marans!!! right pink? Sheesh.. hers went over by 6 days!!! Mine do too sometimes.. I just set sunday night....I haven't even looked up the date yet..
Thanks Debbi...Keep thinking those warm thoughts for us Northerners!!!

yep! the last little bugger who is doing great hatched on day 27, so you may have an opportunity Wynette.
Eating the GFF pullets 6th egg from yesterday for breakfast..........yummy, it was huge and a double yolker, the color of it was fantastic so I think the GFF girl that started early will definately be a keeper.
Pink: JEALOUS... my girls take 8 months to lay... DRAT.... Love em though...When they deliver the goods they are worth the wait!!! You are making me hungry pink....I am likely to get the stink eye when I go to the coop as they hear my tummie grumble...
Ug.. the third at best for me... Oh well... I wasn't trying for the January first date.... I just wanted next year's crop and honestly I am a month behind... I sold my set from last December... a mistake I will NOT repeat. I kicked myself all year for that one.
I wish now that I had saved eggs to do the New Years hatch thing, but I put eggs in the 'bater to hatch Dec. 2. That was before I had read anything about the New Years hatch. Now, with these 3 peepers in the house, I didn't feel like I should hatch more that would be one month younger. I'm not sure I could handle several batches in the house over the winter. I'm doing okay with these 3, but I'm thinking I need to build a brooder that would work better in the house. These guys are about to fly out of the box I've got them in. Putting them outside in the barn is out of the question due to the temps. Even if I had heat lamps on them I would risk loosing them if we had a power outage. At least in the house we are able to keep it warm even if the power goes out.
