I just processed a rooster named "Enchilada", a mutt from farmers marked eggs. He was a very pretty white leghorn x something with a rose-comb. My son named him, as he had not yet eaten chicken enchiladas.

I like to skin birds too. Especially in the winter when they have thicker feathers... or when they are older. I've found chickens under 15 wks pluck easier.

I don't know if they really have thicker feathers in the winter.... but it sure seems that way.

a bit of adviceonly to people who are new to chickens i have noticed , when hunting season is in my sister wears blaze orange and the silkie roo attacks her almost always ,
but take off the bright red (orange ) and no trouble ,so point is , keep santa out of the coop or he will be attacked

I had a Splash roo (now in the freezer, skinless

) that would go after the pink water bucket and only the water bucket. The second I picked up the bucket he would charge it, if I put it down and he would go on his merry little way, this was an everyday occurance. Sometimes they can be complete weirdo's.

Hi CP! I read your post yesterday about the vinegar spray...I loved it!
Yep the baby snuggie worked on my Wellie roo that decided to attack me. Carried him around in it for a week while I was doing chores or sometimes just because......it's been months now and he won't even come near me. It was about the same age as Debbi's boy too....I think sometimes they just don't know how to handle all the hormones that flood through them and they feel like they have to test the waters. This was the first time and only time thus far I had ever been attacked by a rooster.....he was also the first one that was granted a stay of execution as well. Before the snuggie I had a one on one with him and carried him to the block and let him try out his textile responses, as he was laying on the block I said to him "See now just because we see, touch and smell it doesn't really mean we want it, do we?"
