Pink,
As has been said here often. We all have to start somewhere & you put alot of effort into doing the right thing. Your customers will love your fuzzies & can have a start themselves. I wish I had more & better but am Happy to have at all & will just go from here & try to get better. As said, it is a process & you are giving them an opportunity of a lifetime.

Thanks for the reassurance my friend. I know and I am the first to preach the very same thing about having to start somewhere, but with so many high expectations held with the Marans, one can't help but give it some second thoughts. I sure do appreciate everyone here in the Marans thread, the dark egg thread, the Wheatens thread and the those that follow the Welsummer thread with me.....I think of each and every one of ya'll as my highly regarded Chicken Lovin' Family!

Makes my day that we can all get together and talk chicken and life and it's all good....ya know what I mean?

It sounds like most of the people on this thread use bigger boxes than I do but mine work fine. I turn PVC 5 gallon buckets upside down with their lids on & cut a large arched opening in them starting above the double rim. The rims hold the bedding in place (on the most part. Some hens are more athletic than others). My ducks even use these nest boxes sometimes & they are alot longer than my chickens. Alot of the time I see 2 of my Heritage Delawares that I got from Lotsapaint using one nestbox at the same time. How they fit in there I don't know but I have had no broken eggs...........LOL

I had to laugh when I read about the 5 gallon buckets, I have some 30 gallon barrel that I cut a 12" opening in and put sand in bottom about 6" and shavings and straw. I use 5% sevin dust in these also. I have no egg breakage with these.

Kim, I have been a poultry Hoarder all of my life, my reply to all is as long as I pay for the feed and take care of them myself it should not be a problem for anyone else.

When you sell eggs and chicks just tell buyers what they should expect to show up. What gets my blood boiling is some one that claims to have only show quality fowl and only posted a few doctored eggs in the listing. Just like any other sales , deal with the way you want to be treated and everything will be great. I could tell you some horror stories from over the years with chicks, adult and eggs.

Good luck with the eggs and chicks. Maybe some day I will have some good enough to share with others, not there yet. Don

Mine love my barrels I use 50 gallon ones with 8" square cut in each end use shavings, rice hulls and stall dri in there easy 3 can fit and I have one hen who likes to look in at the worker......

These are really neat ideas, thanks for sharing them, I can see using the 5 gal one in pens that don't have a lot of extra space

I have used the 5 gallion buckets for single matings also. I use the 30 gallon barrel is my 6'x10' larger pens. I stand the barrel upside down with the plugs removed just incase the rain might blow in the pens, I cut a 12" or so hole about 12" off the ground, they work really good for me and the 5 Gallon buckets work really well also. Thanks Don! Means alot coming from you and I mean that sincerely. I hold no secrets about my birds to anyone and probably bore some with the details and endless jabber, I agree, it is very important to let folks know as much as we can about them when they are looking to purchase. Thanks for you well wishes and remember to keep me in mind when you are ready to share those White Marans!

I met the most remarkable lady last night....

See, Kim, I DID find you on here! I am already looking forward to those chicks and am happy NOT to be dealing with a mail-order hatchery. Believe me when I tell you that meeting you last night saved someone at Meyer Hatchery a major "Disgruntled Customer" call on Monday.
I am going to try to get up to see your birds next week, but I will call before coming up. K?
