Pink - Happy Birthday, and congrats on grannyhood! You're younger than me too. We just found conclusive evidence that baby #2 is a boy, due May 23rdish.
Yeah, Legbars are cool. I'm not huge on crests though. Kind of frufru on a rooster. The Leghorns that layed blue were actually a strain of white leghorns that someone developed, I think in CA.
I tried to hatch out some Legbars from UK, but airsacs were completely bust, like tiny bubbles all over.
Geebs - I've read that days 4-7 are the critical ones for egg turning. Theory is now that turning helps the network of vessels to form, and that's when they're in their peak growth. So the turner shouldn't make the difference if it was on at day 4. If your eggs aren't huge, or particularly sensitive (like Sebright) than winging it works well. Sorry about the loss of your girl. I have a cull rooster that was beating up on my gentle Leghorn Roo, so I booted him out of the coop in 11-12 degree weather. He didn't freeze to death, and he's a small guy - hardfeathered, not fluffy at all, and he survived several days of weather in the teens. It wasn't until freezing rain hit and he didn't stay out of the rain that I felt sorry for him and brought him into the basement. His feathers were frozen and he couldn't fly. But he survived, and will be a neighbor's supper sometime this weekend. Chickens are amazingly tough to the cold. Your girl could still be out there.
