Pink, no one answd my question earlier, help mar out. OS if a fault if my welsummer rooster doesn't have red in his breast? His breast is all blak.

Well it's going to be a VERY busy Marans year for me. I have 22 hatching egg orders just for Marans and as of today orders for 75 Marans chicks for some local folks around here. The girls better get to crack-a-lackin' out the eggs. Looks like I'm in for a longer than normal for me hatch season. I love fuzzies!

I'm excited, but a little scared...folks around here (geographically speaking) tell me I am a chicken hoarder and that it's time to share the Marans love more than I do. Geesh, allright aleady, but I get so nervous letting them go.....*what if they're not good enough?*.....*what if their eggs aren't dark enough?*......what if is what goes through my mind alot. Does that happen to everyone else too or am I just being a wuss?

Pink - Happy Birthday, and congrats on grannyhood! You're younger than me too. We just found conclusive evidence that baby #2 is a boy, due May 23rdish.
Yeah, Legbars are cool. I'm not huge on crests though. Kind of frufru on a rooster. The Leghorns that layed blue were actually a strain of white leghorns that someone developed, I think in CA.
I tried to hatch out some Legbars from UK, but airsacs were completely bust, like tiny bubbles all over.

Geebs - I've read that days 4-7 are the critical ones for egg turning. Theory is now that turning helps the network of vessels to form, and that's when they're in their peak growth. So the turner shouldn't make the difference if it was on at day 4. If your eggs aren't huge, or particularly sensitive (like Sebright) than winging it works well. Sorry about the loss of your girl. I have a cull rooster that was beating up on my gentle Leghorn Roo, so I booted him out of the coop in 11-12 degree weather. He didn't freeze to death, and he's a small guy - hardfeathered, not fluffy at all, and he survived several days of weather in the teens. It wasn't until freezing rain hit and he didn't stay out of the rain that I felt sorry for him and brought him into the basement. His feathers were frozen and he couldn't fly. But he survived, and will be a neighbor's supper sometime this weekend. Chickens are amazingly tough to the cold. Your girl could still be out there.

That's wonderful news Village! Congratulations!

Agreed, the crests are not too macho. The blue egg thing is what peaked my interest in them at first but after the research on them I just didn't even dare. The blue egg laying Leghorns sound interesting....took that person some work to make that happen, kuddos to them.

Ya'll remember that Black Copper hen that was egg bound a couple months ago? Well....I found her egg bound again a couple of days ago, did all the neccessaries for her but this morning brings sad news. I just came in from checking on her and she has lost the fight. This afternoon I will be do the nasty and examine her with the help of my nephew. I can be there when these things are done but I just can't be the one to do the actual opening of the bird. Once it's done I have no issues and will get right in there and do what needs to be done. I told ya'll I was a wuss. I can put down a chick but I just can't do it with an older bird.......

On a happier note...I have peeping in all 4 Marans eggs in one of the 'bators. 4..I'm a big hatcher, huh?
