It sounds like most of the people on this thread use bigger boxes than I do but mine work fine. I turn PVC 5 gallon buckets upside down with their lids on & cut a large arched opening in them starting above the double rim. The rims hold the bedding in place (on the most part. Some hens are more athletic than others). My ducks even use these nest boxes sometimes & they are alot longer than my chickens. Alot of the time I see 2 of my Heritage Delawares that I got from Lotsapaint using one nestbox at the same time. How they fit in there I don't know but I have had no broken eggs...........LOL

I had to laugh when I read about the 5 gallon buckets, I have some 30 gallon barrel that I cut a 12" opening in and put sand in bottom about 6" and shavings and straw. I use 5% sevin dust in these also. I have no egg breakage with these.

I love to improvise & recycle whatever I can get my hands on, or that I have laying around. My husband & I are both kind of collectors (I admit to being the worst). My son brings home the buckets from work at no cost & I use them for so many different things. I will try the sevin dust & maybe even the sand. They do eventually kick out all the bedding even with the large lip.

How funny Denny............. I don't have access to 50 gallon barrels or I would try those for the ducks. I was thinking of trying to find some on Craigslist though. I have been mixing feed lately & I struggle doing it with those 50lb sacks so I was thinking I would put a sack of each feed in the cement mixer & mix it up ( my husband keeps it cleaned out well) then dump it already mixed into a 50 gallon barrel with a locking lid to store.

Don't feel bad Mel...............It is NOT my first day here & I still suffer with it......I am just happy that it's envy & not jealousy. I am happy for every dark egg I see on here. There is future hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Happy New Year to you too. My husband set up an old camcoder on zoom on a tripod at my window focused on my hummingbird feeder & hooked it to an auxilary channel on my TV. Whenever I saw a hummingbird come I just switched the TV to that channel & got a great close up view. Closer than I could have ever hoped to get in person. I spent that summer bird watching even when I was in the house.
