Debbie, Your roo is just so handsome. Pip is getting to be a cutie too. I'm glad you didn't cull him.
I will get some pics of the keys tomorrow. I got the inside of thier coop painted but not the outside yet. I figure I can always do the outside sometime while they are locked up for the evening..just turn on the flood lights lol. Today is the first day we put them in the coop/run.
OMG they are so wild! These are chickens that have been roaming around Key West wild all thier lives. Then they get caught and taken to the Key West Wildlife Center where they are wormed and treated their health checked out etc.. Then they go to a farm in central FL where they go out for adoption.
If you pick up a hen they scream bloody murder. The roo runs away too but is pretty mellow once you have ahold of him. He is very young still so maybe I can get him tamed down a little . One of the hens is kinda blackish colored with lacing on her chest and she is the friendliest of the hens meaning she doesn't run away if you look at her real hard lol.
So....we are trying to catch them from thier holding pen this evening to put them in thier new coop/pen. The roo and 2 hens got out and I never thought we would catch them. 3 of our freeranging Marans roos chased the crele looking hen underneath our house first thing grrrr. Then the keys roo ran back to the dense woods at the back of the property. His favorite wheaten looking hen went with him. They actually came back after a few minutes and were scratching around in the leaves next to the new coop where the other 2 non escapee hens we put in there. We finally caught those 2 but making a trap of nets lol. The one finally came out from under the house and one of the bad freeranging marans roos chased her and she jumped up and flew into the window of dh's pickup! I jumped in there and caught her real fast ...good thing the passenger window was rolled up because she tried to fly right through it lol. Gawd if they ever get out again I'm gonna shoot myself LOL!! One good thing happened after they had been in their new house for about a half hour. The wheaten looking hen jumped up into the nest box and the roo went up with her and she laid an egg
Oh lawdy, that is too funny! Nice that you got an egg out of the ordeal. My pullets don't like to be held either, and will cluck and scream till Fugs comes over to give me the stink eye. Yet, if I sit in a chair, they are all over me, especially if I have meal worms
Lucky you got them all penned up, can't wait to see some pics! What size/color egg do they lay?
Ha that's cute that Fugs is looking out for his girls.
They lay a little off white colored egg..like a bantam would lay almost. They are smaller chickens than standard size but larger than true bantams. Maybe if I gave them some meal worms they would love me? I could be the chicken whisperer and tame them
One thing I know they love is bread. There are restaurants down on KW that the chickens hang around outside of and people will feed the chickens pieces of thier burger buns or whatever. I gave them a few torn up pieces of bread the other day for a treat and they went psycho for it.
It is such a relief to have thier coop mostly done because now I can concentrate on some small breeding love shacks for the Marans!
Geebs update... 5 pips no hatchies.... First pip at midnight... I will be watching that guy or gal... gotta name it accordingly... Like Uno bar... ha ha... (gotta have the chocolate in there)
