Hi! I have a question. I have a FBCM 2 month old roo. He has a couple white feathers in his primary feathers. Is this a disqualification or might these go away after a first molt? Thanks!

Thank you, thank you, thank you.................... I had fun doing it & have 4 more cut out & waiting for better weather to put together. I love to draw plans up & play around recycling. A neighbor sold me the fruit bins for $20 each so I was eager to give it a try. My plan is to separate ech rooster in one of these pens & give him hens for company when I want their eggs. Hello cluckcluck42, I am still learning on this thread. My understanding is not to be concerned about white feathers before they molt. It is after the molt that it is a problem.

Great! That is what I like to hear. Is it somewhat common for them to have white feathers? The girl has none.

It is common for the babies to have some white on them but not all of them do. I have found that alot of the ones who don't have much white as babies turn out to be dark birds with dark coppering.

So, far with my birds, I've found it to be the opposite. The more white primary feathers they have as babies, the darker (more melaniser) they have as they get older.

So I've been reading all these stories of dissapointment from shipping eggs. I realise it's a gamble because of USPS handling, etc.....
What about having regional egg meets? People within a several hour drive of eachother getting together at some centeral local. With the goal of selling/trading hatching eggs and avoiding the post office all together. Does anyone do this? I know in some states people do chicken swaps... but I have avoided those. Read too many stories of people getting sick chickens.

Could even make it like a tupperware party and go to someones house eat, be social, show off pictures of your flock......

Any words of wisdom on this idea?

I will organize if there is interest but..... I am in Vermont! You westcoasters are on your own! I am so wishing I lived in northern California, as far as Marans breeders go...
