Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks for posting that Pink!

Why should the blue copper hen have a "lemon" colored head?? Shouldn't it be copper/orange too, or is that not possible??

That's a good question.....I'll have to ask. I assume around 50 degrees with levels of effectiveness tapering off the colder the temperature.

Here is a snip from and email from Bev regarding reading the standards:

Hi Kim

"Some of them have to be tweaked to read the way the APA wants them but they shouldn't change much."

Does anyone else who lives in real sunny areas have their birds especially the roos' neck feathers bleached out from the sun? I noticed that on my freeranger males last summer, their hackles, became quite lightened by the sun over the summer. Some that didn't nomally have straw hackles (both blue and black coppers) developed lighter or more orangy coloring by the end of the summer. I guess if you were gonna show them, you should keep them in the shade so thier true coppering would stay that way lol. Just an observation...

Good question! I know the sun bleaches hair on animals, like Black Angus cattle out here all have a dark reddish tint to them in the spring, and when I raised Dobes in CA., the reds would turn a couple of shades lighter if left out in the sun. Wonder if that is why my Pip cockerel's hackles are looking so much better and darker now in the winter months? He was put out in the summer and the hackle color was not looking promising at all, now they have a more copper tone to them.

Pretty rooster. I see dandelions in the grass. Must have been a spring picture? Was he about a year old here?

Thanks

What all kinds of eggs are you locking down?

Pink chick: On the female blue copper, what does that mean narrow lacing of coppery orange on breast? I didn't think the females would have any on thier breasts. None of mine do

"Breast: Upper breast, blue with narrow lacing of coppery orange" Are they referring to more the front of thier neck?
