Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I would totally love to raise white marans. You wouldn't have to worry about if they had any white in thier feathers LOL! How dark do the white chickens lay on the Marans egg color chart?
I have seen a few other auctions for BBS Marans here on BYC can't think right now of who's they were....

ETA: Okay here I found the recent one I was thinking of it was rockinpaints who had them. Not sure on pureness and all that just saw the auction.. Link: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=438973

Pink - you're totally right! Here's what it says:

I developed my own line of solid blue marans. I started with a blue copper rooster and a solid black copper hen. It has taken a few generations but I have bred out the copper coloring, resulting in solid blue marans.

I guess I was completely wrong. Shanks ARE feathered, and they are not true BBS extended black based Marans. Just overmelanized BCM! Interesting! I wonder if Bev's is a real extended black based blue?

Ok, now I'm confused...again! Isn't the White a dominant color? And if Blue is the dilute of Black, how would you get black anything out of a White x Blue mating??

flgardengirl - I see that you have golden cuckoo marans. Do you ever have eggs, chicks, or pullets to sell? I hatched eggs from pasofinofarms last spring, and ended up with 3 roosters, no pullets. I have been told I can breed GCMs by crossing my rooster(s) with either a BCM or silver cuckoo maran, but I'd rather not have to go through generations to get GCM pullets. I have kept 2 of the roosters - gave one away - and would like to get started because I love the looks of the GCMs. Thanks.

I have a few questions into Ms. Bev.

There are good lines of White Marans here in Europe with nice dark eggs. I set some last week, and the whites are actually darker than the wheaten and BCM I got from the same breeder. But it could be a difference in the laying cycle. She says that usually the BCM are darker.

I've seen dark laying white marans eggs on BYC before. Don says his lay 6's I think.

Here's that picture of the eggs I set. The whites are third row up.

Debbi - Aren't White Marans recessive white? I'm pretty sure I've read that they are recessive white, at least that's what they aim for them to be. Sorry that would be confusing if they were dominant white.

verlaj: I have 2 pullets and 2 roos hatched from pasofinofarms. I don't have them in breeding pens yet but will this spring.
The other really light golden cuckoo roo I have from a different breeder is apparently really a barred black tailed buff marans so I have him in a different project.

VillageChicken ~ I'm more than likely wrong in my thinking. Seems to me I read the White was a dominant color, but I may have confused that with another breed? But, even if the White is recessive, how do you get black from two lesser traits (white and blue)?? Still confused here!
